I wanted to say a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the 5th Grade BETA members from Gamaliel Elementary & Joe Harrison Carter Elementary in Monroe County. This past weekend was the National BETA Conference in Nashville, TN. The Living Literature Group from GES came home with a 4th place in the nation trophy for their portayal of Polar Express and the Songfest Group from JHC brought home top honors receiving 1st Place.

All of these kids worked very hard and I am sure that I speak for everyone in our county when I say that we are very proud of all of them. A big thank you goes to the teachers & faculty from both schools who take time out of their already busy schedules to help the kids so that they have the opportunity to shine!

Next year they will all be together as classmates of the Monroe County Middle School….I can’t wait to see what they do together! ?

I had the good fortune to celebrate the 4th a little early this year. Last month I spent a week in Philidelphia and got to visit Independence Hall (pictured) where the Declaration of Independence was debated and signed. I also saw the Liberty Bell and all the other historical sites of the city. It was a wonderful experience. The tower of Independence Hall is currently under restoration, as should be completed in August of this year.

Wanted to share this photo. We went to see Mr. Keith Vincent play live at a club in Evansville, Indiana this weekend. We were in the last class he directed at Glasgow.. It's been 14 years and was so good to see him. He is still directing and playing gigs on the side. I know many people remember his legacy with the Scottie band and he is still greatly missed.

I’ve attached a picture taken of my family’s recent trip to the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center. This is a scale model of the space shuttle, the booster rockets and the transport – all made out of KINEX! The three fellows responsible for this are shown - Wesley Smalls, Jared Bedwell and Emil Mottola. The shuttle has working cargo doors, a flexible robot arm and the transport pad even rolls! This was an added bonus to seeing real rockets and probably amazed us even more. Needless to say, we had a great time in the Huntsville area!

The 2010-2011 Bobby Steenbergen Award of Excellence in Athletics was recently presented by the Barren County Athletic Booster Club. The award, named for former Coach Bobby Steenbergen who was instrumental in developing the athletic program at the high school, is given to a female and male student athlete who portrays sportsmanship, leadership, excellence in academics and commitment characteristics that were a hallmark of Coach Steenbergen’s career in coaching. In addition to the recognition, each recipient is awarded a $200 college scholarship by the Booster Club.

The Barren County Athletic Booster Club recently started a new tradition and awarded two Dual Credit scholarships to junior athletes. This year’s recipients are Tesia Bailey & Alana Alexander. Both students received $200 each which will cover the cost of tuition and books for a WKU Dual Credit course of their choice during their 2011-2012 senior year.

BARREN COUNTY SCOOLS AND PEARSON VIRTUAL LEARNING POWERED BY FLORIDA VIRTUAL SCHOOL ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT

(Kentucky Association of School Administrators Summer Institute – Louisville, Kentucky) – July 14, 2011 - A special press conference was held at the annual Kentucky Association of School Administrators’ Summer Institute at the Galt House in Louisville today to announce that Barren County Schools has chosen to partner with the Pearson Virtual Learning powered by Florida Virtual School program for virtual services to be utilized by the Barren Academy of Virtual and Expanded Learning (BAVEL).

Bo Matthews, the current Director of Pupil Personnel who will become the district’s new superintendent, and Phyllis Lentz, the Virtual Learning Manager of the Southeast Area for Pearson Virtual, made the announcement. Andy Ross, the General Manager for Global Services of Florida Virtual School, who participated in the meetings leading to the partnership agreement, was out of the country and unable to attend.

“Because of our continued growth and need to expand our services, such as summer school classes and higher levels of advanced math, science and technology classes, we entered into discussions with Ms. Lentz and Mr. Ross to establish this phenomenal partnership,” said Bo Matthews, the current director of pupil personnel and incoming superintendent for Barren County Schools.

“With this partnership, BAVEL will be using Pearson Virtual Learning because of the engaging, rigorous content and the very proactive teaching model that combine to make for student success,” said Matthews. “Florida Virtual School has exceptional teachers who know their content, care deeply for the students they serve, and are very responsive to individual student needs.”

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with the students of Kentucky through BAVEL. Our course catalog offers over 100 course titles that will provide expanded options for students,” stated Lentz. “Students are demanding more options and we know that online courses can provide these options through a 24/7 educational opportunity. We have every confidence that Kentucky’s public school students will find the resources they need through BAVEL.”

Glasgow Middle School Cheerleaders attended UCA Camp July 18 -21. The cheerleaders received 4 blue ribbons, a spirit stick and an overall rating of Superior. They also received Camp Champs for the Extreme routine and 3rd place for cheer in the medium middle school division. Taylor Wethington was named All - American Cheerleader. These are pictures of Sonya Merritt, a native of Glasgow and the team that she plays with. They are the Tennessee Illusions '00, a competition travel softball team from Nashville, Tn, and they recently went to Panama City Beach, Florida to compete in the USFA World Series, July 9-17, 2011. In the 10U division there were over 80 teams from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio and the Illusions were undefeated. This past weekend, July 21-24, 2011, they played in Jackson, Tn in the USGF World Series and took 2nd. This is a great group of hard working girls and we are very proud that Sonya has been afforded the opportunity to play the game she loves and succeed at it. We are very proud of her and just wanted to share the success of a Glasgow girl and hope that she can continue to represent as well as she has this far.

My son, Sam, and I went on a father/son road trip a couple of weeks ago. He'd never been to the Paducah area and the western part of the state before. We had a very good trip together and even made it to the Super Museum in Metropolis, Illinois. This is the largest Superman Museum in existence. Here is a picture of Sam with a Superman statue in the town square, adjacent to the museum. Yeah, that's a big statue.

It is not too unusual to see a cat climbing a tree. One can even see a young groundhog in downtown Glasgow from time to time. You might have even heard of a groundhog climbing a tree. But you just don't see a cat chasing a groundhog UP a tree very often. Probably a good thing that the cat didn't catch it. After about ten minutes they both tired of the view and went separate ways.

Our family visited our nation’s capitol last week and saw many wonderful sights. The first picture is of our sons, Travis and Trent, on the walkway of the Capitol with the Washington Monument in the background. The second picture is the boys in front of the Kentucky marker at the World War II Memorial. We stayed with Glasgow native Jeff Brown and his wife Lisa who are stationed at Ft. Meade, Maryland. Thanks again Jeff and Lisa!! We really enjoyed our visit and encourage everyone to make the trip if you have a chance.

There was a special Story Hour July 26, 1010 at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library featuring Mr. Finley the fish and Princess Belle.

Mr. Finley the Fish from Captain D’s Restaurant made a splash during Story Hour as the children made a sparkling fish craft and heard the story “Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister.

Beauty & the Beast’s Belle from the Glasgow Summer Theatre was our guest for Story Hour! She read “Beauty & the Beast” to the children and was available for photos and autographs.

At this year’s Monroe Co. Watermelon Festival there was a new activity to enjoy. The newly founded Monroe Co 4H Dog Club put together a dog show. The activity was a fundraiser for the club & was a huge success. Even though the day was extremely hot, those who came out to participate & just to watch have said it was great family entertainment.

Photo # 1 – Members of the Dog Club at the club’s booth. They were in charge of selling chances on the wonderful dog gift basket, getting people registered early for the show & getting votes dropped in the jars so that we could select a most photogenic dog for the show.

My daughter and I took a trip to NYC in April of this year this is a picture of the cross from World Trade Center and the signs that go with it.. very emotional place to be even 10 years later... 9-11 a date in time all Americans will remember.

Hello Mr. Anderson, the first picture is of a Fowler's Toad found in our yard this spring, common in south central Kentucky. The second is of a Pickerel Frog, also common in south central Kentucky. The Pickerel Frog kept jumping in front of the mower until my husband caught him and put him in the bucket, which is why grass clipping are showing on his back. Toads and frogs are very beneficial to our gardens.

I don't know if it is too late to get a 9/11 pic in or not, but this is my good friend and college roommate, Mark Hindy. Mark worked for cantor-fitzgerald in the north tower and was killed on 9/11/01. He had visited Glasgow on at least one occasion, derby weekend, 1993. We stopped and ate lasagna at my mother's house before heading on to louisville and the derby. Mark was a loving, caring soul and he is missed every day by those he left behind. thanks for posting and keeping the memory of Mark alive.

We wanted to share a couple of pictures of our first annual Allie's Angels Poker Run for Down Syndrome. The money raised will be donated on September 24th at Greenwood high School in Bowling Green for the 2011 Annual Buddy Walk for Down Syndrome.

Allie Grace Payne is 4 years old and attends Red Cross Elementary Preschool. She is the daughter of Jimmy and Jennifer Payne. She is the little sister to Garrett Payne.

The Payne family wants to thank everyone for their support and donations that helped make this years poker run a huge success. We are anxiously looking toward next year for the 2nd annual Poker Run for Down Syndrome.

Glasgow Dairy Queen Donates $1,000 to Barren County High School Athletics

Glasgow Dairy Queen recently donated $1,000 to the Barren County Athletics. Tim Rigdon of Dairy Queen presented the check to Barren County High School Principal Steve Riley and Athletic Director Bob Blair. Glasgow Dairy Queen is a dedicated and proud supporter of Barren County High School athletic and academic programs.

Sadly this Buckeye butterfly is one of the last of the Summer....This species does not migrate as does the Monarch....There seemed to be less butterflies this year...There just wasn't enough wildflower due to the weather... We can still enjoy the Hummers for a few more weeks.

North Jackson Garden is keeping the Jaguars busy this Fall. In the outdoor classroom, the garden inspires curiosity, cultivates a feeling of ownership, and allows students to be active participants in their own education. Just wanted to submit this photo of our winners for the 4th Annual Jail Break 5K held by the Glasgow Public Defender’s Office. This year all proceeds went to the Boys & Girls Club of Glasgow/Barren County. A great time was had by all and we were able to raise money for a wonderful organization. American Cave Museum Opens CAVE OF FEAR this October

The American Cave Museum will be opening the CAVE OF FEAR in downtown Horse Cave every Friday and Saturday night throughout the month of October. The “Cave of Fear” will begin shortly after sundown and continue until Midnight.

Tickets are $15.00 per person and children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The CAVE OF FEAR tour begins in the American Cave Museum and descends more than 100 feet underground into the depths of Hidden River Cave. This event is not recommended for small children.

Those who wish to participate in Horse Cave’s Halloween revelries will find plenty of scares, delicious treats from the Gallery Bakery, and discounts on future Hidden River Cave tours (CAVE OF FEAR ticket stubs can be redeemed for $5 dollar cave tours after the Halloween event is over.

Teens will RYOT on Sunday, Oct. 9

Praise and prayers went up for the bands, speaker, volunteers, but mostly for the teens who will attend the RYOT on October 9 on the Happy Valley School lawn. Organizers met Sunday night to pray for the event which aims at reaching youth on time for Jesus Christ. “Our job as Christians is to prove to teens that there are people in our community who genuinely love them,” said Nathan Peters, youth worker at Glasgow First Assembly of God Church.

“God has a plan for us and He is equipping us to do His work,” added Sam Tollison, pastor of Glasgow First Assembly of God Church and coordinator of this year’s RYOT. “It’s like the loaves and fishes – our finances are completely covered, thanks to donations from businesses and fundraisers. Who makes $1,000 on a yard sale? RYOT did! God is showing Himself strong.”

Churches across Barren County sponsor the RYOT, and follow up with the kids who attend. Brandon Petty, lead pastor of Generation Church in Portland, Tenn., is the featured speaker. Bands include Danya, God’s Gift, Kryst Like, and G.I. Food, games, give-aways – all free. Finding the true love of Jesus Christ – priceless. The Barren County High School Marching Band Invitational is just around the corner. On Saturday, October 15, 2011 starting at 10:45 a.m. 13 marching bands from around Kentucky will descend upon the BCHS Campus to compete for their chance to become Grand Champion of the Invitational.

The following bands will be in competition: Caverna, Cumberland County, Metcalfe Co.,LaRue County, Glasgow, South Warren, Russell County, Allen County, Owensboro, Calloway County, John Hardin, Madison Central, and Muhlenberg County. The Barren County Band will perform in exhibition at 8:00 p.m.

There will be lots of yummy food available including Trojan-nator Taters, Funnel cakes, rib eye and shoulder sandwiches, plus much, much more.

Barren County Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) recently participated in the Barren County March for Babies, one of their many community service projects. FBLA members donated $528 to assist the other teams in raising over $21,400. For their efforts, Barren County FBLA was recognized as the Top Youth Team. Barren County FBLA members and advisers thank all who assisted by raising money for this community service project.

BCHS Green Team Visits Landfill

Members of Barren County High School’s Green Team visited the Glasgow Regional Landfill recently. Buck Houchens and Chris Blythe spoke with students about the process that goes into the disposal of our waste and the benefits of recycling. “Standing at the edge of the huge mound of waste really shows how important recycling is for the future”, commented Calvin Penn a senior at BCHS. Accompanying student to the landfill was CSM Phillip Gearlds who is one of the Green Team sponsors this year. “Land field space is very limited within our community. We need to recycle and use our space wisely”, says CSM Gearlds. Green Team members will be working on projects this school year that encourages reducing, reusing, and recycling as a means to protect our environment and “Give Earth a Hand”.

The trees on the Green River flood plain and in the park's karst valleys are turning more rapidly that those on the ridge tops. Fall color in the valleys has progressed to more than 50 percent; ridge tops are at 25-50 percent.

Local Cub Scout Pack 586 got together for a kayaking trip on the Green River a month ago. This is a photo that Shawn took of Sam and myself (Bill Anderson). We had a fantastic time and the weather was absolutely perfect. On the trip, we saw deer, a Bald Eagle, a rattlesnake, turtles, wild turkeys and a spider that had to weigh at least 10 lbs! (okay, maybe 5 lbs. - Eeesh)

I took this photo of Cumberland Falls, on a motorcycle ride, Monday October the 18th. It was a bit of a hike to get to where it was taken. But well worth the walk.

On Thursday, September 29th, a luncheon was held to honor volunteers at Barren County Health Care Center. The guest speaker was Senator David Givens. Approximately 100 volunteers were in attendance. Pictured is Volunteer Richard Wilding, Volunteer Edna Railey, John Robert Miller, friend and guest of Senator Givens, Senator David Givens and Administrator Steve Brown.

This was from last Saturday when we removed the substation transformer from our (the EPB's) Cleveland Substation. The transformer was damaged during a past storm event. Currently most of the load that this transformer served is being fed from Glasgow's new substation which came online this past February.

Bill, Heres a picture of our kids, grandkids, and nephews of pumpkins that they carved!! They were so thrilled when they were finished!! Job well done!!!!

Glasgow Scottie Band will be performing at the 2A KMEA Semi-Finals this weekend (October 29th, 2011) at Greenwood High School in Bowling Green. We will be defending our State Championship.

The Glasgow Garden Club held their annual fall clean-up of the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery entrance on October 21st. Donations to the club's memorial fund help to provide money for mulch, replacing plants, and trimming the trees and shrub. This year, daffodils were added to the landscape in the spring and pansies were planted this fall. The cemetery is a beautiful part of Glasgow and is particularly beautiful in the fall when the trees are changing colors.

Here is our son Landen Houchens (#336, foreground, lower left) racing in the Loretta Lynn's National Motocross Race. He finished the year out in the top ten in the points series!

His goal next year is to win the series and be the best youth rider. He loves to race and wants to be a pro someday. Landen is a second grader at Red Cross Elementary.

October 16-22 was Teen Read Week. Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library celebrated with a prize drawing. Teens registered guesses of "how many pieces of candy in the jar." (Gayle Berry at the South Central Ky. Cultural Center added the following information: From September, 1931 - The Glasgow Republican - Mr. Ralph Hammer has entered Western Kentucky Teachers College in Bowling Green. Ralph was formerly on the football team of the Glasgow High School and will play with the team of WKTC. He was born July 5, 1910, the son of Wesley Boles and Lucy Downing Hammer. His wife, Polly received the Silver Star Medal, posthumously awarded to her husband for gallantry in action on January 19, 1945. He died that same day in Luzon, Philippines. - You may refer interested people who want more information to the Cultural Center. Open Mon-Fri: 9-4 and Saturdays 9-2.)

(lower photo) This is Paul Walker and his mother. He was an outstanding football player at GHS, went to UK in 1941 and went into the US Army as a Paratrooper. He jumped over France and was hit with a German 88, requiring several surgeries. After his tour of duty in the Army, he went to U of L, where he played basketball. He was the Rec. Director here for several years before moving to Bowling Green. You may have heard of the Paul Walker Golf Course which is named for him.

This is a picture of all the SCB Operations Employees who dressed up for Halloween. Everyone really enjoyed dressing up and as you can see the costumes were great. Thanks for letting me share.

These pictures are from Saturday morning on the square. The Bounty of the Barrens is still going strong (Note: The outdoor version of Bounty of the Barrens Farmers’ Market for 2011 has now come to an end. They will continue to have the market on the second Saturdays of each month though the winter at the Barren County Cooperative Extension Service office).

I was able to purchase a watermelon and some fresh turnip greens. I encourage everyone to continue to attend every Saturday. It's worth it!

I just could not resist putting this picture on the web page. This is the granddaughter of Bill and Susan Osborn. She was 5 months old yesterday. Her name is Madilynne “Maddie” Grace Ware. Her Mother, Karen Creech-Ware, serves in the United States Navy in Fort Gordon, Georgia.

We went to visit children and grandchildren at Salt Lake City, Utah. On a trip to Evanston, Wyoming we stopped to view this formation on the mountain side outside of Ogden,Utah. "DEVILS SLIDE" is what this is called. Notice how the rocks have formed making it look as if it is a slide down the side of the mountain. A gentleman that was going fly fishing took this for us.Just thought others would enjoy seeing some of God's amazing handiwork.

Dear Bill,
The November 2nd, 2011 DAR meeting of the Edmund Rogers Chapter, NSDAR, was our annual Salute to Veteran's program. Commandant of the Marine Corps League, member of the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans; Marine Corps Vietnam combat wounded and highly decorated retired Sergeant Joe Litera was the inspiring keynote speaker. Joe is a recipient of both a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. In attendance were four veterans of World War II (Logan "Larry" Calhoun, Earl Kinslow in uniform, Edward Smith and Kenneth Wood) and three women veterans (Gert Granger, Jean Lyle and Marty Marsh), heroes all.

BCHS Students Concerned about Their Community

Community Service is very important to Barren County High School students and they proved this once again by attending the Relay for Life Kick-Off meeting for Barren County/Glasgow on Thursday, Nov 3. Eric Skipworth and Megan Garrison registered the Future Business Leaders of America Chapter (FBLA) and Katie Harvey registered the Family, Community, and Career Leaders of America Chapter (FCCLA). Other organizations that will be joining the efforts is Beta, Barren Beyond the Bell, Athletic Booster Club, and STLP. Sophomore Tyler Hensley and Junior Travis London are also serving on the Relay for Life Board as student community representatives. Last year, BCHS raised over $2,000 for Relay for Life and expect to increase that amount this year through their efforts during the annual Pink Out and Quilt Raffle (Donated by the Barren County Homemakers). North Jackson Elementary Recognized for Teaching, Educating, Leading and Learning

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) – On Monday, November 7, 2011, at the 17th Annual Safe Schools, Successful Students Conference in Louisville, ten Kentucky public schools were recognized for the working conditions, school safety and student achievement in their buildings.

North Jackson Elementary was selected as one of the ten, based on data from the Teaching, Educating, Leading and Learning (TELL) Kentucky survey, which was administered to all public school teachers and principals in March of this year.

Jonas Bastien and his grandmother, Frances, both of Glasgow, recently toured the Mayan site of Chichen Itza in the Yucatan state of Mexico. Jonas, shown above, is in front of an archeological zone in Chichen-Itza’s older section, build during the Late Classic period between 700 to 900 A.D. Also visted was the Sacred Cenote or sacrificial well and the old Spanish Outpost city of Valladolid, founded in 1545. Earlier this year, Jonas and his mother, Cristiane, toured Machu Picchu, the site of an ancient Inca city, high in the Andes of Peru, 8,000 feet above sea level, making two World Historical Sites that Jonas, a Freshman at Glasgow High School, has visited in one year.

Hi, Bill. I thought I would share this photo of my daughter, Jordan Gosnell. Jordan works on the Bravo television show Inside The Actors Studio With James Lipton. From the left is James Lipton, Jordan, and sitting in front of them is the episodes guest, James Franco. Jordan has been with the show for five seasons. She also graduated Magna Cum Laude from college last May. She continues living and working in NYC and we are very proud of her.

The photo was made at Wayne Sexton's Recording Studio in Cave City, Kentucky where a variety of local singers and musicians donated their time, talent and cost of production to provide this fund raising product for the Morrison Park Holiness Camp Meeting Grounds. The camp meeting ground is located on Hwy 63 at the intersection of Bristletown Road and is currently under renovation.

BCHS Lauches College Application Week

Barren County High School had 125 seniors, from the “GEAR UP Class of 2012,” make 263 college applications in one day. Barren County High was chosen as one of 13 Kentucky High Schools across the state to launch “College Application Week.” Sponsored by KHEAA, Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority, the week was an effort to assist all students with their college applications so that the process itself would not prevent any student from pursing a continuing education.

Several school wide activities, with participation from the school faculty and staff, helped to make the “College Application Week” a success. Teachers and staff were encouraged to decorate their door to promote the college of their choice. Teachers and staff were also asked to share their own personal story concerning their college application and lessons they learned about attending college. College shirt day was a fun day for students and staff to wear a favorite college shirt. On application day 11 colleges and universities, from across the state, participated in a college fair in the school library. Over 200 seniors and a few parents attended the fair, making some very important contacts with colleges of interest. In addition to the 263 applications made during the fair, some students left with several applications to be filled out at home and mailed in at a later date.

According to Magnet School counselor, Nicole Jones, “It is a wonderful opportunity for students to ask their college admissions' counselors questions without having to schedule an on-campus visit”.

Senior Counselor, Angie Frazier agreed and had this comment, “College Application Day was a great opportunity for our students. Many of our students are the first in their family to go to college and beginning the application process can be very intimidating. The admission counselors were on hand to answer questions and assist students with the application process. I am overwhelmed at the number of students who came in to apply. I am very excited with our turn out and looking forward to planning for next year!”

Barren County High’s GEAR UP Program coordinator, Kathy Lowe was pleased to see so many of her students in attendance. “After 5 and a half years of working toward the goal of College Readiness and Preparedness, it was very exciting to see them actually applying to colleges and universities. The seniors were a little nervous, apprehensive, and of course excited that the day is finally here and we are indeed ready for that next step.”

In late October we got the chance to fly to Utah and see grandchildren. The weather was perfect and we took them for playtime at the park. Just want to show off these five precious gifts from God to everyone. As you can tell they are stair steps in age. The oldest is 6 and the youngest will be a year in January. The week went by too fast, but we sure did have fun.

These two young ladies are living proof that teens can make a huge difference in our community. Chanea Smith and Martina Chapman formed the "Teens Helping Hands Food Drive" and collected numerous food items and several cases of canned goods during the month of November. With the support of their church, friends and family members, the girls were able to make a sizeable food donation to the local food pantry at Bowling Park in Edmonton. I am very proud of them!

The Barren County High School Dance Team competed in a dance competition this weekend in Louisville. The team did a wonderful job, obtaining a 3rd place in the HipHop Division. Mammoth Cave is one of Kentucky’s Greenest Fleets

(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – December 12, 2011) On December 7, the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition named Mammoth Cave National Park one of the commonwealth’s greenest vehicle fleets and a pioneer in alternative fuels.

Mammoth Cave received one of twelve Pioneer Fleets of the Green Fleets of the Bluegrass Program awards at the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition winter meeting at Bernheim Forest. Each “pioneer” is working to improve the environmental performance of their vehicle fleets by reducing petroleum fuel use.

Mammoth Cave National Park is a Pioneer Member of the Green Fleets of the Bluegrass program. Mammoth Cave is the first national park in the country to utilize 100 percent alternative fuels and advanced technologies in their fleet. Biodiesel is used with all heavy duty equipment, including the Green River ferry boats. Low speed electric vehicles are utilized by campground staff, and all cave tour buses use propane. More than 90 percent of the vehicles used by Mammoth Cave run on either E10 or E85. The park partners with concessionaire Forever Resorts to enable both park and hotel vehicles to share the park's refueling station. Mammoth Cave is a member of the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition.

LOCAL SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS TRAVEL TO CHINA

(Glasgow, Kentucky) December 15, 2011 – There were literally thousands of bicyclists heading in all directions and dozens of cranes dotting the skylines as if to signal the country’s dramatic growth and prosperity. That was the first introduction to Chinese culture for a large contingent of U.S. school officials upon their arrival in Beijing, China last month.

Various sources report that someone in Kentucky traveling to China will cover over 7,000 miles and spend approximately 14 hours on an airplane in the process. With that piece of trivia planted firmly in the back of your mind, what would motivate someone from Kentucky to endure such a long journey? Well, if you spoke with Bo Matthews or Benny Lile, both administrators for the Barren County School District, located in, yes, you’ve got it –Kentucky, they would tell you they did it for the future of their district’s students.

“This was an opportunity of a lifetime,” said Matthews, who serves as the district’s superintendent. “Had it not been for Western Kentucky University’s Confucius Institute and The College Board, we never would have been able to go. This trip has been extremely beneficial to all of us as public school administrators from the United States because we will use what we’ve learned to benefit our students by strengthening their academic experience in school.”

“Yes, this was extremely beneficial to us professionally and very rewarding, personally,” said Lile, the district’s instructional supervisor and director over technology. “We were able to visit a large number of schools and observe teaching and learning. All of us have read the research and various journals and books regarding the Chinese approach to learning, but seeing it first-hand really makes it more meaningful and valuable to us as educators.”

Beyond cultural enrichment, the trip will also provide incentives and strategies for educators to return to the United States better able to support the growth of Chinese language and culture programs in their own districts. Chinese is the national language of the more than 1.3 billion inhabitants of China and millions more ethnic Chinese around the world.

Cheryl Messenger, standing at the mouth of Mammoth Cave, received the NPS Freeman Tilden Award in November 2011 recognizing her as the top interpreter/educator in the Southeast Region of the NPS. Messenger is the director of environmental education at Mammoth Cave National Park.

(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – December 16, 2011) Mammoth Cave’s award winning environmental education program received further accolades in November when its leader, Cheryl Messenger, received the regional Freeman Tilden award, recognizing Messenger as the best interpreter in the Southeast Region of the National Park Service (NPS).

“I am not bragging when I say that Mammoth Cave’s environmental education program is second to none,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed. “Past honors seem to fuel Cheryl and her staff on to greater endeavors and deeper partnerships that bring unparalleled opportunities to teachers and students in south central Kentucky.”

The Freeman Tilden Award is an annual award recognizing outstanding public contributions in interpretation and visitor services by a NPS employee. Freeman Tilden, who wrote The National Parks, What They Mean to You and Me and Interpreting Our Heritage, greatly influenced the development of NPS interpretation and education programs.

By partnering with Western Kentucky University Education Department (WKU), Messenger received a National Park Foundation grant to initiate the largest inquiry-based outdoor learning training for education majors in the country. Focusing on students who are about to become teachers, it demonstrates the advantages of using outdoor settings and inquiry-based learning techniques to teach critical thinking skills in both science and social science subjects. Since the grant began two years ago, 400 WKU students have been immersed in the overnight, in-park learning experience.

“Very few teacher-education programs provide outdoor learning as part of their curriculum requirements for graduation,” said Reed. “This grant combines Western Kentucky University's goal to produce innovative and well trained teachers, with the park’s goal to connect people to the value and significance of Mammoth Cave through learning experiences.”

“Inquiry-based learning produces a sense of discovery as students seek answers to their own questions and interests,” explained Mike Adams, chief of interpretation at Mammoth Cave, who nominated Messenger for the award. "The process creates a powerful personal and intellectual connection to the park. We have been told by students that this was the most useful courses in their college career. Many students who were hesitant to participate have left enthused, anxious to bring their own classes to the park or use inquiry-based learning in other settings.”

Messenger and her staff also work with more than 30,000 K-12 students each year, both in the schools and all around the park.

Past honors received by Messenger and her staff include:
• Kentucky Association for Environmental Education 2011 state award winner for Excellence in Environmental Education;
• 2010 commendation from NPS Southeast Regional Director David Vela for "…outstanding work in EE with WKU, the NPS Geoscience Teachers-in-the-Park program, and in grant partnership efforts with the National Park Foundation";
• By Governor appointment, Messenger serves on the Kentucky Environmental Education Council (2006-present);
• With WKU, the Mammoth Cave environmental education program was awarded a $100,000 National Park Foundation grant in 2009;
• Messenger served on the "Master Plan for Environmental Education in Kentucky" task force in 2009;
• Messenger graduated from the inaugural class for "Kentucky State Environmental Education Non-Formal Certification" program in 2004;
• Mammoth Cave’s environmental education program is a 21st Century Learning Center partner with Barren County Schools and Caverna Independent Schools.

For the past several years various small road-side cedar trees in the stretch of Highway 31-W just north of Park City have mysteriously been trimmed out for Christmas. This year's version is only about two feet tall and can barely support the decorations. It is located on the south side of the road across from the Southern States feed mill.

He attended WKU and U of L, becoming an attorney. He also served as commander in chief of the Air Force's Strategic Air Command.
