CARROLL KNICELY CONFERENCE CENTER EXPANSION -- The expansion of the Carroll Knicely Conference Center, Western Kentucky University South Campus, in Bowling Green, was showcased at a luncheon held Tuesday, June 29. Pictured are, from left, Don Swoboda, Ph.D. – Dean of the Division of Extended Learning; Taylor Helton, Hospitality Management; Derek Olive, Assistant Manager; Sue Parrigin, Ph.D., Manager of the Conference Center and Steve Garden, Sales Manager. The Center, opened in 1994, was made possible through a generous donation by Glasgow resident, the late Carroll Knicely, newspaper owner and Kentucky State Cabinet Director for Economic Development during the administration of Governor Martha Layne Collins. The Center is located at 2355 Nashville Road in Bowling Green and includes a board room, classrooms, computer lab, large meeting/ballroom, conference rooms, auditorium, as well as audio or video equipment and comprehensive catering for any event. Knicely, known for his commitment to Community Service was remembered and thanked during the presentation.

114 students were enrolled at Glasgow Baptist Church's Saddle Ridge Ranch June 21st-25th, with 75 workers helping during the week's VBS. We had a great week!

Just wanted to share a special moment for my family.... My husband Toby graduated with his GED certificate in November 2009. On June 25 not only did he get to walk the line & graduate, he was chosen as Barren County ALPHA's student of the year. We are so proud of him!

Seven members of one of Monroe County’s Lady Falcons travel basketball teams recently attended the Sylvia Messer Basketball Camp at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tn. This camp helps the girls to become stronger basketball players. The girls were able to stay in the dorms on campus & worked very hard but also had lots of fun. Several of our girls were also recognized for various accomplishments at the conclusion of the camp & came home with awards.

The parents of all the girls are very proud & can’t wait to see our girls back on the court!

Attached is a picture from our recent trip to Normandy. The picture was taken in the American Cemetery In Colleville sur Mer, France. The cemetery was established by the US First Army on June 8, 1944 and was the first American cemetery on European soil in WWII. The cemetery site covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. It took this trip to France for us to have a renewed sense of awe and appreciation of what America accomplished in WWII. You may remember scenes of this cemetery in the opening and closing of the movie, "Saving Private Ryan."

The Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library's Horticulture Class recently toured member's gardens. The tour began at the library with the small water gardens that had been demonstrated in a class by Doreen Gravelle and the container vegetable garden put together in a class with Barren County Horticulture Agent Kristin Goodin. Don Houchens, in his suit and tie, shared his and neighbor, Larry Jolly’s, garden. Shown under Larry's cucumber canopy are Serena and Cole, two participants on the tour. Additional gardens toured belonged to Shawna and Donald Depp, Joy and David Stryzek and Scarlett and Donnie Edmunds.

The attached pictures are from the Metcalfe County Fair Western Horse Show. It was a perfect night for the show and everyone there had a good time. Our granddaughters were the star attractions for us in the lead line class. Melody Francis is making her debut riding Boot Scoot'n Boogie accompanied by her mother and father Michelle and Matthew. Making a repeat appearance Audri Houchens is riding the marvelous Dutchess.

I would like to share this special moment with everyone. My daughter Lauren Stinson won the Karaoke Contest at the Hart Co. Fair last week in the 12 and under division. She enjoyed her first contest singing Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” and we are very proud of her! Thanks for letting us share!

On July 18th Harley & Judy Proffitt will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Family & Friends surprised the couple last Saturday, July 10th at the Gamaliel Lyons Club building with a small get together. They seemed to be very surprised and no doubt very appreciative of the work that went into pulling it all together. Smiles & tears filled the room as everyone enjoyed a meal & reminiscing.

Harley & Judy are the parents of Lori Proffitt Barlow of Glasgow & the late Sherri Diane Proffitt. They are also the proud grandparents of Dalton Goad & Aleiah Barlow also of Glasgow. Happy Anniversary Uncle Harley & Aunt Judy!

I thought everyone would like to know how much the squirrels enjoyed the rain today.

Bill, We are celebrating our son's birthday by climbing two 14,000 ft peaks in Colorado. From the left are Carig Raisor (our son-in-law), Dathan Chesnut, Mike and Jess Chesnut and friend Mark Nelson (from Glasgow) on Mt. Bierstadt. Dathan now adds Glasgow's highest birthday party to his list. Yes, it is very very cold for July 8 in Colorado, but beats the 95 temps back home!

This picture was taken while our family was on vacation at Tybee Island, GA. Our daughter, Chanea Smith on the left and best friend Martina Chapman on the right, were having a wonderful time jumping the waves on Tybee Island Beach! My favorite time of the year is when our family gets to take a summer vacation and spend time together.

The Mammoth Cave National Park Association held its annual meeting in the park on Saturday, July 17. Lee Davis is the president of the association. They were joined by Congressman Brett Guthrie.

This is a picture of some of the bikes in the parking lot behind Big Moose's the day the "Some Gave All Kentucky" bike tour traveled through Glasgow and had lunch there. Again, like last year we traveled to different cities in Kentucky paying tribute to the families of fallen soldiers who lost their lives in the war against terrorism. It was nice to be a part of this patriotic 4-day event.

Highland Ridge Assisted Living’s WWII Veterans recently presented a program entitled “Freedom Isn’t Free: Live from the Front” at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library. Retired Marine Major, Bobby Travis, acted as moderator of the program. Refreshments were in keeping with those available during WWII… Tootsie Rolls were part of a soldier’s field rations!

This is our beautiful daughter Rachel Bertram. She was a contestant in the Temple Hill Fair Pageant. She is 5-years-old.

I just wanted to share this picture of my good buddy Jeffrey Ryan Reed, of Glasgow, who was privileged enough to visit the T.I.G.E.R.S Preserve in Myrtle Beach, SC. Just look at how he fits right in with these orangutans. Jeffrey has such a big heart and his love of animals is a feature of his that should be admired. I’m glad to call him friend.

The following pictures are of Glasgow native Allison Stokes. Allison currently lives in Tampa, Florida, where she has been training in the art of Muay Thai for the past 3 years. Muay Thai is an ancient form of martial arts that uses elbows, punches, knees, and kicks to attack an opponent. For the second year in a row, Allison has traveled to Thailand to train and fight. These pictures were taken at her August 2nd fight at the Tepprasit Boxing Stadium in Pattaya, Thailand. Her friends and family are proud of her hard work and dedication to this grueling sport. We wish her the best of luck in her upcoming fights and look forward to her return to the states in a few weeks.

The last couple years my husband Mike and I have hosted at Beaver Creek Campground. During this time we have seen many large strings of fish taken from the lake. However....on July 5th of this year I got the opportunity to photograph this monster catfish caught at Beaver Creek.

About 10:30pm on July 5th Emmert Barnett (left) was fishing with his nephew James Barnett (right) when James felt his fishing pole being tugged on. Little did he know he had a 30 minute fight on his hands just to land this monster flathead catfish. The catfish weighed 55 pounds and was 55 inches long. I believe this has been the biggest catfish caught on a rod and reel from Barren River Lake this summer.

Hi Bill, I'm sending a photo of "Cruisin' for a Dream" car show that was held on Saturday, August 14. The Mustang Mafia, Glasgow Chapter, hosted the car show at Gillie Hyde Signature Lot here in Glasgow. This was the first for our club, The Mustang Mafia, and was a huge success with 165 entries. We chose to benefit the Dream Factory which provides dreams for chronically and critically ill children. We were blessed to be able to donate over $3000 for this wonderful charity. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen.

Make-A-Wish Made My Wish Come True!

On Monday, June 7th, Spencer Dickson's wish came true. After a year long wait, Spencer finally got to meet his favorite WWE superstar, John Cena. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Spencer, along with his mom and dad, flew to Miami for three fun-filled days. It was a trip he will never forget and we are very thankful to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for making Spencer's wish come true.

This included school supplies for the recent Library sponsored Back to School Bashes; funding for the new Kindermusik Lap sit Program; renewal of the popular on-line book club, DearReader.com and the purchase of two transport dollies. Support for author visits is being provided; the October 16 “Ghost Stories” program by noted Louisville author and storyteller, Thomas Freese, has been underwritten by Friends; additional classic films have been purchased for the Glasgow Film Society and $2,000 was given for projects of the Library’s choosing.

BCHS Hosts 3rd Annual AP Parent Night

Parents of Advanced Placement students at Barren County High School were invited by special invitation to the 3rd Annual AP Parent Night on Thursday, August 19, 2010. The purpose of the evening was to familiarize parents with the courses offered and to allow the teachers to communicate ideas and expectations concerning their classes.

Parents were welcomed by Principal Keith Hale in the auditorium where the vision for the AP program was shared. Information concerning AP growth, the middle college, scheduling and weighed KEES money was shared with parents. “The growth of our AP program is a true testament to the importance of rigor and relevance to our students. We have 335 students enrolled in at least one AP course. 473 AP sections are currently being taught by 12 Barren County High School teachers. These numbers prove that our students recognize the relevance and importance of AP coursework as it helps to prepare them for their future,” expressed Mr. Hale.

After a meeting in the auditorium, parents were dismissed to attend informational meetings conducted by the AP teachers. Parents were treated to refreshments served by volunteers and the Youth Service Center.

Parents were excited about the results of the event. “We really enjoyed attending AP Parent Night. Both of our daughters are learning a lot in their classes and are being challenged to prepare them for college. Anna has taken three AP tests so far and has received credit for all three tests. We have been very happy with her results,” shared Cindy Young, mother of Anna and Kaylie Young.

The night was a success and a great demonstration of the support students and the AP program receive from parents.

(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – August 26, 2010) Did your summer involve night-vision goggles, infra-red LEDs, and acoustic transects? Marissa Maldonado, Midlothian, Va., and Samantha Sterman, of New York, N.Y., can say "yes" to that question – they interned at Mammoth Cave National Park from June through August and used night-vision goggles along with infra-red LEDs at roost entrances and drove acoustic transects along roads to monitor bats.

“We have some unusual work for students who are conservation-minded and want to spend their summer outdoors,” said Eddie Wells, the park’s volunteer coordinator. “We hosted 16 interns this summer, and sent them out to test water quality in the backcountry, inventory protected plants, combat exotic plants, as well as monitor the park’s bat populations.”

Assigned to the night shift, Maldonado and Sterman traveled all over the 53,000-acre park in search of bats. They positioned themselves at known bat roosts (cave entrances, buildings, and trees) at dusk and waited for bats to exit. Using infrared lights and night-vision goggles, they counted each bat and recorded its species, if known.

Some nights Maldonado and Sterman gathered data using a recording-bat-detector on loan to the park from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). With a microphone attached to the roof of a truck, they drove an established route at 20 mph. The detector recorded ultrasonic calls (echolocation) that bats make when traveling or feeding in low light conditions.

“The information we gain from this study will be shared with USFWS and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources,” said Park Superintendent Patrick Reed. “With white-nose syndrome on our doorstep, these are critical data that we haven’t previously collected--at least not on this scale.”

White-nose syndrome is a fungal disease that has killed approximately 1 million bats in the eastern United States since 2006. In caves where WNS is present, up to 95 percent of the bats have died during hibernation. The disease has not been discovered in Kentucky to date.

Maldonado graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelor’s degree in biology (2010). Sterman will begin her second year at Oberlin College this fall.

The summer interns at Mammoth Cave were hired through the Student Conservation Association (SCA); the park received special funding through the National Park Service Youth Intern Program.

“SCA provides us with skilled, enthusiastic workers,” said Dr. Rick Toomey, director of the Mammoth Cave International Center for Science and Learning, who coordinates park research projects. “The students get experience working in land management by helping the park with significant environmental issues. In the case of the bat monitoring program, the emergence counts and acoustic transects will provide base-line data critical to park management. The information will also be fed into a national study of summer bat activity.”

Asking questions leads to better learning - Teaching teachers at Mammoth Cave National Park

(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – September 3, 2010) Consider passive versus active learning. Would you rather learn math sitting at a desk, or put it to use as you calculate the height of a tree? Study the water cycle from a book, or follow a stream’s course above and below ground?

Through overnight workshops at the park, Mammoth Cave National Park and Western Kentucky University are partnering to teach new teachers how asking questions leads to better learning. Funded by the National Park Foundation’s Parks as Resources for Knowledge (PARK) program, the workshops are designed to use our national parks to enhance college and university learning.

“Encouraging questions and engaging students in their surroundings stimulates learning,” said Cheryl Messenger, Mammoth Cave’s environmental education coordinator. “It’s called inquiry-based learning and it emphasizes thinking and doing, not just memorization. The goal is to introduce new teachers to the concept before they enter the classroom.”

WKU assistant professor Dr. Jeanine Huss coordinates the campus-side of the program. She emphasized the benefits of the workshops to the schools where the pre-service teachers will eventually work. “Getting teachers and students out of the classroom and into the outdoors has psychological, learning, and physical benefits,” said Huss. “We provide teachers with the hands-on tools and activities they need to connect their lessons with the world around them.”

“Kids, and adults, learn more easily when they are outside, moving and experiencing a lesson,” said Neil Mullholland, president of the National Park Foundation. “National parks are America’s best classrooms, and we’re proud to be connecting more teachers and students to the parks in their communities.”

During one of the workshops last year, teacher-students mapped sections of Gothic Avenue inside Mammoth Cave, noting features such as cave springs, stalactites and stalagmites. Then they walked above the cave to find sinkholes and other surface elements that correlated to what they found in the cave.

The park has coordinated similar day trips with WKU since 1980. Thanks to the National Park Foundation grant, the workshops have expanded to an overnight program in 2009. “The overnight more than doubles their time in the park,” said Messenger. “It gives participants the chance to make observations and ask their own questions, like why does this rock sparkle, or where did the cave dirt come from?”

Messenger said the best part of the program is seeing the impact it has on future educators. “One pre-service teacher said she dreaded the idea of spending the night in the park, but after she participated in the workshop she said she couldn’t wait to do something similar with her future students.”

This year she expects to host 240 education majors in six overnight trips and 4 single-day programs.

For the sixth year in a row, the Barren County High School Academic Team won the TJ Samson Academic Team Bowl. Members Landon Alexander, Seth Church, Mattie Bruton, Matthew Zuccari, Peyton Johnson, Haley Hagan, Alana Alexander, Evan Payne, Wes Crews, and Kay Jones displayed the confidence achieved from their many years of experience competing in the TJ Samson Bowl during the meet. “It always feels great to win something for six years in row. To keep going back and winning is a major achievement. We expect a seventh year win next year,” shared academic team member Seth Church.

“For the members of our academic team to have won the TJ Samson Bowl for six consecutive years is an impressive accomplishment. This demonstrates the caliber of excellence and dedication these students exude,“ remarked Principal Keith Hale.

Academic Team Coaches Lesley Shive, Anthony Mires, and Jonathan Vaughn were proud to see the hard work of their team members pay off. "This is a great group of individuals that give it their all!!" commented Coach Lesley Shive.

Members of the BCHS Academic Team practice two hours a day, three days a week with league meets held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. “We are expecting a great year this year. We’ve changed our practice strategy and we feel this will help us be even more competitive,” forecasted academic team member Landon Alexander.

Hey, Bill. While I am in the DC area on a work detail for the Postal Service, my brother, Chris Manning, was in town for an ASLA meeting (American Society of Landscape Architects). My husband, Amos, and daughter, Mary Frances, were visiting as well. This picture is taken in Old Town Alexandria after a great dinner on the waterfront. Thought the folks back home might like to see Chris, a 1980 Glasgow High graduate. We were 1 of 30 first-time recipients and are very proud to best recognized for our work here in Barren County. A BIG thank you to Marcus for spearheading the application process. The Edmund Rogers Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution commemorated the 223rd anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution as part of their first program of the 2010-2011 season. County Judge Executive Davie Greer and Mayor Darrell Pickett signed a joint Proclamation in honor of Constitution Week, Sept. 12-18, 2010. The group then moved on to the Barren County Courthouse to meet and hear a program on the Origins of Trial By Jury and Constitutional Guarantees by Honorable Judge Phillip R. Patton followed by lunch at George J's.

This picture was made while on vacation back in July. We flew to New Orleans got on a Carnival cruise ship and went down into Mexico making port stops in Progresso and Cozamel then returning to New Orleans to stay 2 more nights, a vacation I'm sure we will never forget! There were lots of memories made some we discuss and some we don't. We had lots of fun and I think we all hated to see it end. In August, Mammoth Cave Ranger David Alexander flew with Kentucky State Police in search of marijuana.

(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – September 27, 2010) On August 26, Ranger David Alexander made the maiden voyage of a Mammoth Cave officer flying in the Kentucky State Police helicopter as they searched for marijuana fields in and around Mammoth Cave National Park.

“We now have an agreement in place with Kentucky State Police that will allow park law enforcement officers to be on board reconnaissance flights,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed. “Our rangers know the park and the suspicious areas within the park. This partnership will increase our ability to find and destroy marijuana.”

“KSP approached park managers in February with the idea of flying over the park as a joint operation,” said Alexander. “It makes their patrols and ours more efficient. This first joint flight focused on marijuana eradication. In the future we plan to use the overflights to look for resource damage and boundary encroachments.”

No marijuana was found in the park on this flight. Rangers first found cultivated marijuana on the park back in the 1980s, and have since looked for it every year.

“In flying over the private property around the park, we found a total of 60 marijuana plants in the Lincoln area and in southern Edmonson County,” said Trooper Charles Swiney, public information officer for the Bowling Green KSP Post.

Park rangers will reward up to $1,000 to anyone who provides information that will lead to a successful prosecution for drugs or other crimes on park lands: contact Ranger Alexander at 270-758-2122 or 270-646-7241, or leave a recorded message on the Park Watch line at 888-219-1599. Information provided will be kept in strictest confidence and those calling may choose to remain anonymous.

Officers assisting with the August 26 overflight included: Trooper Joel Huff, KSP-Hart County; Trooper Terry Alexander, KSP-Bowling Green; Lt. John Clark, KSP-Coordinator; Mammoth Cave Rangers Josh Clemmons and Jonathan Bledsoe served as ground crew.

BCMS Beta Club Partners with State Environmental Education Program: Junior Beta Club members along with parents volunteered at a recent recycling program on the grounds of the Cave City Convention Center. This project was a community service component of the Kentucky Association for Environmental Education's (KAEE's) annual state conference which was held in Cave City. Collaborating partners with KAEE were G & R Reclamation, Barren County Solid Waste and the City of Cave City. During this two-day event, 8,548 pounds of cardboard, newsprint/paper, glass, metal, aluminum cans, and computer components were recycled. Adult coordinators were Glen and Robin Burba, Shannon White, and KAEE board members. Several of the members of Scout Pack 586 went canoeing/kayaking on the Green River October 3. In the photo on the left are Kelly and Sam Anderson (siblings were invited, too). This was Sam's first canoe trip. We tried going several times in the fall, but kept getting rained out. There were several kayaks and several canoes. You might think the low water level of the Green River would make the trip easier, but that's not the case. A couple of the canoes took spills in the river when they hit submerged trees and limbs. Our canoe was the only one that didn't take a spill, but I got wet anyway, as you can see on the right. This was from helping some of the others who had problems. The water was cold, but we had a wonderful time.

Sam said, "Dad, I sure love canoeing!" Since the weather was cool, Kelly got to wear her favorite cap - she had a great time too (and took the picture of me and many other pictures as well).

On September 23, the Leaders of the Future Steering Committee of the Glasgow Barren County Chamber of Commerce hosted a press conference to announce the Leaders of the Future Class of 2010-2011.

Victoria Watson and Preston competed at the State Fair Dog Show this past August. They had a very successful show including Reserve Grand Champion in Overall Showmanship. They were the grand champion in Non-Experienced Showmanship and the class champions in Non-Experienced Showmanship 13-14.(Non-Experienced means no AKC showmanship points.) They won blue and champion in Novice A Obedience, and received a blue (excellent) ribbon in Rally II (off-lead). Victoria's 4-H Dog Project Leader is Denise Sexton. She and Preston continue to work on obedience at Cumberland's K-9 Academy with Alan Cumberland.

The City of Glasgow provides us the ease and convenience of curbside recycling. While everything can't be easily (or economically) recycled, many things can. Among the things that are easily recycled are cardboard and aluminum. Come on - please take the time and the little extra effort necessary to be a good steward of our planet. (upper photo) Barren County Middle School began a recycling program in March 2010. The program began after Mr. David Alls and a student approached the principal, Cortni Crews, and assistant principal, Lori Downs, requesting that each classroom receive a bucket for aluminum can disposal. Approximately 8,000 cans were recycled from March through the end of the school year in June. Most of the cans were collected from school while others were donated from our community. Approximately $200 was raised from recycling the aluminum cans. Once the 2010-2011 school year began and not wanting to drop the program, Mr. David Alls agreed to continue recycling with the help of his classroom students. Our Youth Service Center Directors, Mrs. Jean Ann Emerson and Mrs. Brenda Chaney were able to locate large cardboard containers through Lakeside Recycling to be used in lieu of the buckets to collect aluminum cans and plastic bottles. The advanced art students then stepped into the program and were asked to paint and decorate all of the recycle bins for the school. Approximately half of the bins were given a specific theme by teachers- for example American History or Ecosystems and the remainder of the bins were given a recycling/nature theme. Some of the students paired up in art class while others worked alone on painting and decorating the bins. The students used acrylic paint and over the course of three weeks transformed over 30 bins into colorful works of art! The program has now expanded into a recycling club offered through “Trojan Extreme” on Thursday afternoons. The money earned from recycling the cans will be used to purchase containers to recycle paper in the future. BCMS is also collecting aluminum can tabs. The goal is one million tabs. Through this effort we hope to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House so they can provide a “home-away-from-home” for families to stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost. Our “Green Team” wants to encourage the Glasgow/Barren County community to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

(lower photo) The Barren County Middle School 7th grade football team has qualified to play in the 2010 Kentucky Middle School State Football Championship based on their current wins (8-0) and the teams they have competed against. The state is divided into 4 regions with 16 teams from across the state competing in the playoffs. BCMS has been selected to participate in the Region 1 playoffs along with Bowling Green Junior High, Moss Middle School, and Lone Oak. Bowling Green and Lone Oak are scheduled to play on Saturday, October 16th with Moss and BCMS playing on Monday, 10/18, 5:30 PM at BCHS field. The two winners from Region 1 will then advance to play on Saturday, October 23rd. The ultimate winner of Region 1 will then advance to play a team from Region 2, 3, or 4 on October 30th with the championship game being played on October 31st. MVP honors will be awarded to an Offensive and Defensive player at each playoff game. The MVP awards ceremony will be conducted on October 30th. BCMS encourages everyone to come out and support the mighty Trojans as they take on Moss Middle School on Monday, October 23 at Trojan Field. Kickoff is set for 5:30pm.

Hello, Bill, this is a Mew Gull on Barren River Lake, seen, identified, and photographed on Oct 18, 2010, by David Roemer from Bowling Green. This is a very rare bird for Kentucky. The first Kentucky state record of a Mew gull was 10/18/2009 on Barren River Lake, again identified and photographed by David. Thus far, it has been seen around Bailey's Point, the Narrows Marina, and State Park beach. The gulls usually seen on Barren River Lake are Ring-billed and Bonaparte gulls. Mew gulls are common on the west coast of the U.S. Birders from around Kentucky and Tenn are coming to the area to see this bird and add it to their "life list."

BCHS Students Receive AP Scholar Awards

Twelve students at Barren County High School have been recognized by College Board for earning AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams. Only about 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.

Seth Church, BC Early College Magnet School senior, qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award. Students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams are recipients of the Distinction Award.

Landon Alexander, BC Early College Magnet School senior, qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award. Students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams are recipients of this title.

Of this year’s award recipients at Barren County High School, eight were juniors when they took the exams. These students have the current school year in which to complete college-level work and possibly earn a higher-level AP Scholar Award. Additionally, all eight of these students are enrolled in the Barren County Early College Magnet School.

Magnet Counselor Amy Allen says this set of AP Scholars is representative of the Magnet School population. “I am extremely proud of this group of students. They dedicate a tremendous amount of time and effort to their AP classes. Studies have shown that students who take AP courses are more likely to graduate college in four years, and I am positive that these students will be successful in their college endeavors. Our AP Scholars are goal-oriented, self-disciplined, and are exceptional role models for our students at BC Magnet. They are a very worthy and deserving group of young men and women.”

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school and to earn college credit, advanced placement or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation’s leading liberal arts and research institutions. More than 3,800 colleges and universities annually receive AP scores.

The G-Force Team, UMYF, and parents of First United Methodist Church, 500 South Green Street, did a "Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat" Food Drive last Sunday evening, October 24. We collected over 1,260 items for our Food Pantry. Every month on the third Thursday, our church serves between 80 - 100 plus families. Messenger named KAEE educator of the year

(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – October 22, 2010) At the recent annual meeting of the Kentucky Association for Environmental Education (KAEE), Cheryl Messenger was named Environmental Education Individual of 2010, the highest individual honor bestowed by the statewide organization. Messenger is the director of environmental education at Mammoth Cave National Park.

“There is no more honest measure than being evaluated by your peers, and this award is a testimony to the quality of Mammoth Cave’s environmental education program,” said Patrick Reed, superintendent of Mammoth Cave National Park. “Cheryl Messenger’s fellow environmental educators from across Kentucky have recognized her as the best in 2010, and here at the park we whole-heartedly agree.”

Messenger and her staff work with more than 30,000 K-12 students each year, both in the classroom and all over the park, plus college students. “This is a large and diverse audience who represent a cross-section of the ever-changing local population,” said Reed.

Lessons are coordinated in advance with teachers and accomplish far beyond the realm of a traditional field trip.

“We want Mammoth Cave lessons to be meaningful to students and worthwhile to their teachers,” said Messenger. “Everything we do relates back to state standards, so our lessons and curricula are focused and easy to use.”

“Messenger takes a common sense approach to her work, almost business like in its practicality and efficient use of time and resources,” said Shannon Trimboli, education coordinator for the Mammoth Cave International Center for Science and Learning, who nominated Messenger. “Partnerships with school systems and universities have produced results that are beneficial to the park and the schools.”

“I have seen the park efforts grow and evolve, keeping pace with changes in the field of education,” said Dr. Jeanine Huss, Western Kentucky University assistant professor and KAEE awards chairman. “The park Environmental Education rangers strive to keep their lessons and methods in line with new findings in learning research and current with teacher needs.”

“One of the most important aspects of environmental education is the way it connects young people with the land,” added Reed. “Being outside in nature allows a student to experience a lesson with all their senses, and they discover that learning can be fun. Leave the TV and texting behind – get outside and find an adventure of your very own!”

(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – October 27, 2010) Greg Davis, manager of the Mammoth Cave Hotel, was recognized as the 2010 Garner B. Hanson Hotelier of the Year by the Kentucky Hotel & Lodging Association (KHLA), at the recent Kentucky tourism conference in Covington, Ky.

“Greg is a great partner to the park,” said Patrick Reed, superintendent of Mammoth Cave National Park, where the Hotel is located. “He and his staff carry on the Hotel’s long tradition of outstanding customer service to the traveling public. It is a great pleasure to work with him.”

“This was quite a surprise to me,” said Davis, who also serves as president of the Kentucky Hotel & Lodging Association. “I am truly honored to receive this award, and the fact that it carries Mr. Hanson’s name makes it even more special to me.”

Nominees must be a leader in their community, active in local organizations, and they must have made a contribution as a leader in the hospitality industry.

“Greg easily exceeds all the criteria for this award,” said Ray Gillespie, executive director of KHLA. “He has worked in tourism at the state and local level for many years, and is still a hands-on manager. Greg is a model for anyone building a career in the hospitality industry. I know Mr. Hanson would be proud of him.”

The following is excerpted from Davis’ award:
“He has been a tourism and industry partner for 37 years. His lifelong dedication to our tourism industry mirrors that of Garner Hanson and reflects positively on his enduring work ethic…He actually began his career in the lodging industry under the guidance and stewardship of the late Garner Hanson. He began his work in lodging in l968. He worked his way through college and returned to Mammoth Cave Hotel in l993 as Assistant Manager and has served as General Manager since 2001 at the Mammoth Cave Hotel.

“He has held positions as General Manager of the Oasis Motor Inn and Restaurant, Executive Director of the Cave City Tourist and Convention Commission, General Manager of Renfro Valley, Executive Director of the Bardstown Nelson County Tourist and Convention Commission.

“He is Chairman of the Caveland Marketing Association, President of the Cave City Chamber of Commerce, Board Member of the Cave City Tourist and Convention Commission, Past Chairman of the Edmonson County Tourist and Convention Commission and still serves on the Board of Directors. He is Past Master of the Park City Masonic Lodge. He is also a member of the Cave City Baptist Church.

“He has served as Secretary of the Kentucky Tourism Federation, on the Board of the Kentucky Tourism Federation and was honored as the l986 Citizen of the Year by the Cave City Chamber of Commerce.

“He is also on the Board of Directors and President of the Kentucky Hotel & Lodging Association.

“He has done all these tasks while maintaining the helm of the Mammoth Cave Hotel…”

Barren Bassmasters Trash Clean-Up for the Center for Courageous Kids

Barren Bassmasters held a fundraiser for camp courageous on Sat Oct.30. The bassmasters and approximately 20 Wal-Mart employees teamed up on a trash round up on the barren river lake. From 8 till 12 we picked up a ton of trash (1,987 lbs. to be exact), around 20 tires and a bowling ball! For our efforts Wal-Mart donated to the charity of our choice which was The Center for Courageous Kids. The Barren Bass Masters provided the boats and 14 volunteers from our bass club. Bowling green Wal-Mart (lead by Greg Stevens) provided approximately 20 employee volunteers, food for a cookout and a generous donation to the camp.

BCHS Named an Official Hammer Strength Training Center

Barren County High School’s Weight and Fitness Center has been named an Official Hammer Strength Training Center by Life Fitness. Superintendent Jerry Ralston, Assistant Superintendent Bill Walter, Principal Keith Hale and Sports Fitness instructor Clay Stephens were present for the official recognition of the facility. The Weight and Fitness Center was built in 2007 and was recently updated with 15 pieces of new weight training equipment by Hammer Strength. The facility is used for Sports Fitness and physical education classes during the day and for sports teams beyond the school day.

“Only select facilities have the prestige of being an Official Hammer Strength Training Center, Barren County High School has earned this status with its line-up of 15 pieces of Hammer Strength performance training equipment,” shared Life Fitness Sales Representative Dave Turner. “By displaying Hammer Strength's official plaque and posters, Barren County High School can show everyone know they've chosen to train on the best equipment on the market today.“

BCHS Sports Fitness Instructor Clay Stephens says the upgrade of the facility is a sign of things to come for the school. “I am very excited to see the tremendous support that our administration has towards the development of our student-athletes. Here is a great picture of the Glasgow Scottie Band. This is during their AA West Regionals competition on 10/23/2010. They were the only band to get a distinguished rating at this event, surpassing all others by at least 4.5 points for a score of 84.5.

BCHS Senior completes State Welding Certification. Brock Elmore, a senior at Barren County High School has been awarded the State MIG Welding Identification Card by the Commonwealth Of Kentucky, Division of Materials. Through training at the Technology Center Brock demonstrated the ability to perform flat, horizontal, and vertical MIG welds meeting all the state welding requirements and guidelines for structural steel. On Saturday November 13th the Glasgow Public Defender’s Office held their 3rd Annual Jail Break 5K. We donate all proceeds to a local charity and this year the organization was BRAWA. We had a great day and raised more than our goal for the animal shelter…. Thanks to all who took their time to help and all of those who attended. The pictures are of all our winners….

Family and friends of Dennis Bull honored him in Glasgow Thursday, November 19, 2010 with a special 60th surprise birthday party. A special luncheon was provided for well-wishers, in addition to a special surprise guest appearance by University of Kentucky head football coach Joker Phillips. This is the T.J. Samson Hospital security department. We just received the Spain award for 2010. That is an award presented to only one hospital in the Commonwealth each year. It is presented for security excellence. It is from the local chapter of the International Association for hospital security and safety, (IAHSS). All of our security officers are certified in hospital security through this organization. We are honored and excited to be this years recipient. TAG Hosts Halloween Party

The Teen Advisory Group at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library hosted a Halloween Party for Tweens and Teens on Thursday, October 28, 2010. TAG was given a budget and was responsible for choosing the decorations and menu for the evening. Over 40 people enjoyed pizza, soda, candy, music and activities. This event was very successful and more programs of this type are in the planning stage.

The G-Force Team of First United Methodist Church recently filled 50 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations worldwide through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God's love. The G-Force Team had fun filling the boxes with items like small cars, stuffed monkeys, socks, candy, soap, wash cloths, balls, jump ropes, flashlights, colored pencils, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other items.

First Church has served as a drop-off point for Operation Christmas Child for the past three years.

Columbia Ave. Contributes to Heifer International

Columbia Avenue Church of Christ Youth Group recently completed a successful campaign to raise $5,000 for an "Ark" for Heifer International. In fact, the Youth Group surpassed their goal, raising over $5,500 by volunteering their talents and services to members by way of a silent auction, hosting a Parents’ Night Out, serving lunch one Sunday afternoon in exchange for donations, and hosting a craft fair with the proceeds going to Heifer International. Heifer International is a global non-profit with a proven solution to ending hunger and poverty in a sustainable way. Heifer helps empower millions of families to lift them out of poverty and hunger to self-reliance through gifts of livestock, seeds and trees and extensive training, which provide a multiplying source of food and income. Glenview Health Care recently collected over 600 cans of food to assist Glasgow's Community Relief Fund. Glenview Health Care had 100% participation from their 76 employees. The facility hopes to surpass these numbers with their upcoming Christmas food drive.

Cole Ramsey got to play Santa in his first grade play at New Highland Elem in Hardin Co. He is the grandson of James & Freida Webb. We thought it was quite an accomplishment.

Bill, this is our granddaughter Calie Jo Hurt and this was her first Halloween. She had a wonderful time and loved the wig so much we spent most the night just trying to coach her into taking it off.

Just wanted to share a picture of one of the things I am sending to my Heroes in Afghanistan. A local grocery store has donated several items to send our guys & gals. Where these soldiers are at they eat mostly MRE's (that's "Meals, Ready to Eat" - The WebMeister). I just want to try & make being away from home at Christmas a little more bearable.

The Mammoth Cave Area Region had their annual 4H banquet last night at the Center for Courageous Kids in Scottsville. My daughter was so excited when she found out that Laura Rogers from WBKO would be presenting the awards. After the banquet was completed Laura was so gracious enough to let us get a picture with her. We would like to say thank you to Ms. Rogers for taking time to spend with all of the 4Hers in attendance.

In the photo with Laura Rogers is my daughter, Payton Trobaugh. Payton is a member of the Fountain Run 4H Club and a 5th grader at Gamaliel Elementary School.

Victorian Tea Served at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library

Timothy Mullin, who is in charge of Special Collections at the Ky. Library and Museum at Western Ky. University, presented a program on the Victorian era with emphasis on architecture and women's clothing. He is shown with one of our hosts, Susan Erskine. The Friends of the Library outdid themselves with fabulous refreshments; this committee is chaired by Linda Tucker. Joy Stryzek, incoming president of the Friends worked with Martha Nell Thomas, Head of Outreach Services, and did an incredible amount of work preparing for the event. Lesley Huff, a native of England, prepared our delicious tea. Holly Alexander’s music welcomed guests and gave pleasure to all those visiting the library while she played.

The Barren County Alumni Association inducted their third class into the Hall of Honor on November 13 at the BCHS Auditorium. The welcome was given by Bud Tarry, president of the Barren County Alumni Association. Bill Walter served as master of ceremonies and introduced each distinguished alumni by reading a biographical sketch. These seven very deserving individuals were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in their respective fields. Each one was given the opportunity to share informative thoughts and insights On their education and career. Dr. Jerry Ralston ended the program with closing remarks congratulating each for their accomplishments and for being outstanding role models for Barren County.

He shared tips on winterizing a home, some upcoming changes mandated by law that will affect energy costs and answered questions from members of the audience. Carter is Vice-President for Member and Corporate Services at Farmers Rural Electric.

Congratulations to Ashley Phelps of Glenview Health Care Facility for her recent graduation from Bowling Green Technical College. Ashley earned her diploma in Practical Nursing as well as an associate degree in Applied Science. She was chosen to receive the Clinical Nursing Award in her class. Our staff is extremely proud of Ashley and honored to have her as a Glenview team member.

Ben Quinn, founder of American Engineers, Inc, (AEI) headquartered in Glasgow, has recently published a children’s book. Forty years ago Ben wrote the fairy tale story of “The Green Glot” for his four-year-old son. Ben and his wife Diane were later blessed with a daughter Rhandi and later six grandchildren whom all have enjoyed “The Green Glot”. In early 2010, Ben sent the book to Tate Publishing, who accepted it for publication. Many that know Ben and his adventuresome lifestyle from climbing mountains to riding motorcycles will probably not be surprised that Ben has more talents to share.
