Glasgow's first swimming pool was located on U.S. Highway 31-E North just outside of town near the property currently owned by the Bravo family and the former service station now owned by the Perkins family. It was a very large pool and extremely popular with people from far and wide. It was closed in the late 1940's after a drowning.

Enjoyed the Nashville Symphony Concert on the square. The night was hot,but the concert was so very enjoyable. Thanks to all those that worked to bring this to our city. Our Glasgow City Police Dept. Color Guard presented the colors at the start of the evening.

Attached is a photo of our 3-year-old granddaughter Kaydence Noelle Morris with Broadway the Clown Friday night at Glasgow’s Concert on the Square. She was quite taken with Broadway and didn’t mind at all waiting in line to receive a giraffe balloon he made for her! We are very sure that she has her daddy Wes’s love for music, as she was so excited and thrilled by both the instruments and the sounds of the Nashville Orchestra…she even used a “stick” baton and directed most of the songs!

Glasgow is so fortunate to have this amazing Concert on the Square each year to kick off the 4th of July celebrations! A big thanks to all of the sponsors who make it happen!

Glasgow's Methodist Church was organized in 1822, making it the third religious body in Glasgow's history (Presbyterians 1802, Baptists 1818). Its first and second houses of worship were located on West Washington Street where the telephone company building is now located; the third building was located on the south side of East Main Street (present city parking lot across the street from the Plaza Theatre). When the fire of 1900 wiped out the East side of the Glasgow Square, the church was severely damaged and had to be razed. The congregation then purchased the old Christian Church building on South Green Street near Wayne Street and worshipped there until the current facility was completed in 1913. This postcard image is unique because the printer mistakenly printed the negative backwards; the taller tower is actually on the left side of the building.

Lots of time was made for sightseeing, but the point of the journey was to learn and compare Speech Communication between countries. We met with collegiate students and faculty, health care professionals, and therapists in all three cities. While in Paris we also visited INJS, the School for the Deaf to spend some time with therapists. A few of us are fluent in sign language and got to interact in the classroom with the students. It was a great trip so I thought I'd share some of my favorite photos! Thanks.

Here’s a photo from winter to cool us down. While they make look threating, these Black Vultures are spreading their wings in an effort to warm and dry themselves. They are sometimes incorrectly called “buzzards”. Buzzards are broad-winged hawks. Black Vultures are often seen with Turkey Vultures which have a red head. Vultures receive legal protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

Situated on the present site of the South Green Street Church of Christ was a building constructed by the Christian Church. After many years the Christian Church built a large new structure on the southwest corner of the Glasgow Square in 1902. Meanwhile, the East side of the Square had burned in 1900 and one of the casualties of the fire was the Methodist Church on East Main Street behind the burned storefronts. The Methodists then purchased the old Christian Church on South Green Street for $1600 and remained there for several years while planning and building the current Methodist Church just down the street. When the new Methodist Church was completed, the Methodists sold the building to the Church of Christ for $1200. Later, the Church of Christ razed the structure to build the current facility now known as the South Green Street Church of Christ.

This longrifle was brought from Abermarle County, Va. by my great-great-great-great grandfather Joseph Perin Lane in the late 1700's. This family heirloom is being passed from my brother, Dr. Gary Lane to my son, Michael Lane. It is believed to be a Fowler .62 caliber.

The re-uniting of First Christian Church and Columbia Avenue Christian Church brought about a new structure for the congregation on the southwest corner of the Glasgow Square. The site had previously been the location of the Matthews Tavern, Glasgow's first tavern and later a large brick hotel occupied the site; the hotel had various names over the years, but its most recognized name was the Franklin Hotel. The "church on the Square" was built in 1902 and became a beloved community icon until it was razed in 1967 after the congregation built a new facility on North Race Street.

Please see the attached picture of a Bald Eagle that we seen at Barren River Lake on Monday 7/9/12. This is the second time we have seen the eagle. The first time we seen it we was last year at the Narrows across from the Glasgow Water Treatment Plant but we didn’t have our camera. This picture was taken across from the State Dock Ramp just on the corner of the mouth of Peters Creek. We had been fishing up Peters Creek and were returning for some lunch when my wife spotted it as we rounded the corner to the main channel.

The ABC band consisted of three local ladies with a penchant for music and fun. Ann Wells, Bertie McGuire, and Christeen Snavely entertained various local groups and gatherings for several years. The name of the band came from the first letters of their first names. Wells shared her talents on the accordion, McGuire played the piano, and Snavely played both drums and spoons. In this photograph they are joined with Anthony "Papa" St. Charles on the drums.

That's old Catfish Hunter after a hard days work at M. Ray's enterprises. He's fallen and he can't get up!

This is the oldest known image of First Presbyterian Church, Glasgow's oldest religious body, founded in 1802. The Presbyterians were the only religious group in Glasgow for several years and their original log church was the only house of worship in Glasgow for around 25 years. This building, the third built on this site, is on the original lot donated by Isaac Robertson, one of Glasgow's first lawyers. This structure dates to 1853 and is one of only two remaining Gothic Revival buildings in Barren County. During the Civil War the congregation was forced to vacate the building and worship temporarily in a building which stood where the telephone office is on West Washington Street because the Union forces in Glasgow took control of the church building and used it as a horse stable. Glasgow's first burying ground was located directly behind the church but was moved many years later to allow for building expansion. The large brick structure on the right of the photo was the county jail. This photo was made by Adolph Rapp and his identification of the photo reminds us that he was a German immigrant who spelled phonetically, thus the unusual spelling of Presbyterian.

These were taken on Glasgow's Public Square in 1982.

The final stage of demolition began today (Monday, July 30) on the old Glasgow High School building. I was in the first class (1966) to graduate from this school, so I thought it only fitting that I take a few pictures of the building coming down. I would like to share them with all my GHS alumni.

St. Helen Catholic Church on South Green Street was dedicated in 1893 by Bishop William G. McCloskey. Much of the work to establish the local parish was carried out by two Glasgow ladies, both converts to Catholicism, Jennie Boles Ellison and Annie Gorin. Cora Wilson is credited with beginning the fund-raising efforts to construct the building in 1889. According to local lore, the Catholic women gathered the field stones in their aprons and carts and brought them to town to be used in constructing the church. One of the stained glass windows in the church was sponsored by the Duke of Norfolk.

In July we were in Utah and on our travel back we saw many windmills in Wyoming. Took this photo of a group of that was over a mile long. Some were really moving while others weren't. Saw several areas of the windmills on this stretch of interstate.

Nick Tunks retired on July 31, 2012, after serving 20 years as the Mammoth Cave Postmaster

Mammoth Cave Postmaster Nick Tunks retires

(MAMMOTH CAVE, Kentucky - August 3, 2012) On July 31, Nick Tunks handed in his keys, climbed on his motorcycle and motored out of the park at midday for an impromptu lunch with his son, Kenny, and daughter, Meghan, in Bowling Green. It was his last day as postmaster at Mammoth Cave, a job he held for 20 years.

"Nick will be greatly missed as our Postmaster and friend," said Acting Superintendent Bruce Powell. "His connection with Mammoth Cave goes beyond the U.S. Postal Service and back generations in his family. Nick's first jobs in the park were as a guide and ranger. His wife, an uncle, and two grandfathers also wore the National Park Service (NPS) uniform."

Tunks began with the NPS in 1978 as a seasonal cave guide; the next year he was hired on as a permanent employee. In subsequent years he served as a law enforcement ranger and in resource management. During this time he also earned an Associate degree in general studies from Western Kentucky University 1983.

In 1985, Tunks transferred to the U.S. Postal Service Bowling Green office as a carrier. He quickly moved up through the ranks as a supervisor and then as a district delivery specialist for central Kentucky. He was promoted in 1989 to assistant postmaster in Glasgow.

When Tunks was offered the Mammoth Cave Postmaster job in 1992, he jumped at the chance to be back in the park. The post office is small, serving the NPS offices, the Mammoth Cave Hotel, and a rural route of about 500 households. However, it was not a sleepy assignment; for many years Tunks was sent on training assignments and special projects that took him all across the country.

"One project was evaluating the use of Segway vehicles for mail delivery," said Tunks. "First I had to master the art of maneuvering on two wheels, and then I was sent out to teach carriers and monitor changes in their efficiency. Over six months, I worked with carriers in Oklahoma where it is flat, San Francisco where the hills are steep, on long delivery routes in Memphis, and in the desert heat of Phoenix. In the end, there wasn't enough of a time savings to implement use of Segways."

When the Wonders of America - Land of Superlatives stamp series was published in 2006, it included a stamp depicting Mammoth Cave, the longest cave in the world. At Tunks' suggestion, the park hosted a cancellation event inside the cave on the first day of issue.

In recent years, Tunks' knowledge of computer equipment has been put to use in installing machines in area post offices and training employees.

Tunks met and married his wife, Tina (Spainhoward), while they were both guiding in Mammoth Cave in 1984. They are natives of Edmonson County, and Tina is a middle school teacher with Edmonson County Schools.

Tunks' grandfather Warner Tunks was a seasonal cave guide in Mammoth Cave in the 1960s; his step-grandfather Henry Cochran was also a seasonal guide in the 1960's. Tunks' uncle, Loyd Cook, was raised on Brooks Knob before the park was established and started his NPS career as the lookout in the Brooks Knob fire tower. Cook retired as a district ranger at Mammoth Cave with 40 years of service.

Upon his own retirement, Tunks' short-term plans are to ride his motorcycle and play with his grandson, Warner. "It is good to know that we will work with Nick again soon as we plan the 2016 anniversary events for the park," said Powell. Tunks is a member of the Mammoth Cave National Park Association, which was instrumental in creating the park; Tunks is the Association's designee for 2016 planning.

The year 2016 holds special significance at Mammoth Cave:
• Mammoth Cave National Park was established in 1941, and will mark its 75th anniversary;
• the National Park Service was established via the Organic Act of 1916, and will mark its 100th anniversary; and
• cave tours began at Mammoth Cave in 1816, and 2016 marks the 200th year of tours through Mammoth Cave.

At a recent meeting of the South Central KY Historical & Genealogical Society, the past Presidents of the Society were honored along with Martha Powell Harrison, a founding member who is still very active in the Society. They were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for their service.

We currently have a doe with twin fawns that visit our yards each day. They're a joy to see. I saw both fawns nursing this morning but my camera would not zoom enough to get a good picture.

This is a calm section of the wild and scenic Salmon River in Idaho. My mother, Elizabeth Rogers, and my son John Thomas Rogers and daughter Katherine Rogers were recently there rafting and camping. The river runs through the middle of the 2.3 million acre Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area and is the longest undammed river in the lower 48 states. It was originally named Lewis's River by William Clark of the Corps of Discovery in honor of Capt. Meriwether Lewis, the other leader of the Corps. Unfortunately, the Corps was unable to navigate the river due to its many rapids and were unable to portage around the rapids due to the steep hillsides. They traversed it as far as Pine Creek rapids and then turned back. Clark wrote in his journal, ".. the water runs with great violence from one rock to another on each Side foaming & roreing thro rocks in every direction, So as to render the passage of anything impossible." Fortunately, rubber rafts now provide safe and dependable transit!

George Bruce Corrie retires from Mammoth Cave, but not from crawling

(MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. – August 21, 2012) “Most of my caving has been underground.” A typical wry remark from George Bruce Corrie, said in a soft tone with a bit of grin. Corrie, a life-long caver, retired from Mammoth Cave National Park on August 11, 2012, with 38 years of government service.

“Throughout his career at Mammoth Cave, George provided a firm foundation for the guide force,” said Acting Superintendent Bruce Powell. “Much of his work was behind the scenes and virtually unseen. As a supervisor to our summer guides, George has taught and mentored hundreds of employees. He is a wealth of information about Mammoth Cave and caving. George will be missed.”

His interest in caving began early in his life with family trips to Luray Caverns (Va.) and Carter Caves State Park (Ky.). “Luray really sparked my imagination,” said Corrie. “Then at Carter Caves, a friend of the family who worked there took us into Bat Cave, an undeveloped, wild cave,” said Corrie. “Not long after that I joined the National Speleological Society – I was still just a kid, so my mom had to join with me.”

A family caving obsession began. Corrie and his parents, George Sr. and Sara, are famous in the caving world for cave exploration, mapping and conservation. During the 1960s, they often traveled from their Huntington, W.V., home to explore and survey James Cave and Coach (aka 1000 Domes) Cave in Edmonson County, Ky.

Corrie is a graduate (1965) of Huntington (W.Va.) High School and studied forestry at the University of Kentucky. He worked seasonally for the National Park Service for a few years, at Ford’s Theatre National Historic Site, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial (all in Washington, D.C.) and Castillo de San Marcos National Monument (Fla.). In 1976, he was hired as a permanent employee at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C.

Corrie came to Mammoth Cave in 1979. Drawing from his vast cave experience, he quietly improved Mammoth Cave tours and working conditions for cave guides by seeing to basic needs:
• He developed and installed telephone listings inside 14 cave phone boxes, essential to all cave emergencies; the small signs prominently state the location of the phone, who to call in an emergency, and other park/cave phone numbers.
• In the 1980s, he saw a need for a teen crawling tour. Corrie proposed and developed the Explorer cave tour to span the gap between Trog (for ages 8-12) and the Wild Cave tour (for ages 16 and up). Explorer became the prototype for the present-day Introduction to Caving tour, for ages 10 and up, and very popular with family groups.
• Always having a mind for safety in the cave, Corrie placed first aid kits along the Wild Cave route, and developed small kits for all guides to carry. He implemented better crawling gear for guides and visitors and upgraded flashlights for guides. For many years, Corrie maintained the guide force gas lanterns, 46 along ten miles of tour routes and 30 held in reserve on the surface.
• To help new guides, Corrie compiled information on the history and geology of each cave tour. He also wrote text for wayside exhibits and several publications.

In his 32 years at Mammoth Cave, Corrie believes he guided 5,875 Historic tours, and probably more than 10,000 total tours along 19 different routes.

“One of my favorite Mammoth Cave memories is from 1991,” said Corrie. “For the park’s fiftieth anniversary I was asked to revive the All Day tour for the celebration, which had not been offered since the 1960s. It is seven miles, from the Historic Entrance, across Echo River, through the Snowball Room, and out to Frozen Niagara. We offered three trips, 80 people each, commemorating the park’s anniversary and 175 years of tours through Mammoth.”

Outside of his work day, Corrie sought other cave experiences. In 1997, he joined the board of Lost River Cave, a commercial cave in Bowling Green, Ky. “It started as an outreach for the park, but grew into my own personal interest,” explained Corrie. Lost River was an underground night club from the 1930s until it closed in the 1960s. Corrie worked with the Friends of Lost River to institute boat tours in the cave; 1,500 people took the trip the first year, 10,000 the next, and now 50,000 people tour Lost River every year.

Corrie plans to continue visiting caves and with his work with Lost River Cave as a member of the Friends board.

This picture is from our recent trip to Puerto Rico, the view is on top of a old Spanish Fort called 'El Morro' originally built in 1539 overlooking San Juan Bay to protect the city of San Juan from seaborne enemies.

This is another picture from our trip to Puerto Rico; I saw the sand mound and felt a little adventurous and decided to climb, it took me a few minutes to get up there, but I finally made it!

On my recent trip to Ireland, we stopped off to visit many many places!

Terryn Honeycutt Varvey and Travis Varney were my traveling companions for more than two weeks. We had such a great time for the two weeks we were there! Here are just a few of the pictures we took.

The first picture is at The Blarney Castle where Terryn and I kissed the Blarney Stone!!! The estate spans several acres and was absolutely amazing. The second picture is an Abbey at the Rock of Cashel!

Bill, this is an early dawn picture of the Isle Royale Queen 4 that transports passengers from Copper Harbor Michigan to Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior. My wife along with three other couples visited there this summer and had a great time. The island is 42 miles long and 9 miles wide at its widest. My brother, Kim Alexander, is the concessions manager on Isle Royale. He was glad to see some of his family and Glasgow folks visit.

Sarah Craighead Selected as Mammoth Cave National Park Superintendent

Southeast Regional Director David Vela announced the selection of Sarah Craighead to be the next superintendent at Mammoth Cave National Park. Craighead currently serves as the superintendent of Death Valley National Park in southern California and Nevada. She will assume her new duties at Mammoth Cave on November 4.

“Sarah knows the value of being attuned to park resources and advancing park goals through partnerships and collaboration,” Vela said. “With her strong operations background and the experience she has gained in more than 30 years with the National Park Service, Sarah is an obvious choice for this position. Not to mention the fact that she grew up in Kentucky’s cave country and actually started her career at Mammoth Cave.”

Just as many college students do, Craighead took seasonal employment at Mammoth Cave National Park while attending Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology in 1978.

“I worked several summers at Mammoth Cave, as a campground ranger and a cave guide,” said Craighead. “My very first job was selling crafts at the Mammoth Cave Hotel. The cave was my jumping off point with the National Park Service. Now, more than thirty years later, I have the honor of managing the park. I look forward to reconnecting with park staff, retirees, and the surrounding communities.”

Craighead has been superintendent of Death Valley National Park since 2009. At 3.4 million acres, Death Valley is the largest national park in the continental U.S., and the lowest place in North America at 282 feet below sea level.

Prior to Death Valley, Craighead served as the superintendent of Saguaro National Park, just outside of Tucson, Ariz. She was the first superintendent of Washita Battlefield National Historic Site in Cheyenne, Okla., from 1997-2002. While there, she gained important experience in developing park plans and working with communities and American Indian tribes.

Bill, The northwest near Mt. Ranier and Mt. Baker were not in the drought and heatwave we experienced this summer. This picture of my wife, Jess, was taken August 8 at the 8000 ft level. There were still several feet of snow with an unusual lenticular cloud over the summit. Of course the glaciers are always there. Upon our hikes to Mt. Baker 70 miles north of Seattle, we discovered up to 15 feet of snow at the 5000 ft level at Artist Point. The road to the upper parking lot only opened July 24! Mt. Baker holds the WORLD record for snow of 95 feet in the winter of 1998/1999. This year they only had 70 feet! Very nice to hike in the snow in August.

Mikayla received a Merit Scholarship to attend the Art Institute and participated with students representing 14 countries other than just the United States. Mikayla is a senior at Glasgow High School. Mikayla normally excels in water color painting but ventured into oil painting with the Chicago Art Institute and earned early college credit for her work.

Hello Mr Anderson, best wishes from Glasgow, Scotland. Here are a couple of pictures of my garden which may be of interest . I have constructed a Japanese corner complete with torii gate and lantern. Possibly this is the only torii gate in Scotland. The statue of figures is a good likeness of three of my grandchildren. Unfortunately we cannot grow exotic plants that you will have in Kentucky, however our wet climate allows rhododendrons and azaleas to grow well and flower in spring and hydrangeas to provide colour in late summer.

Our grandson, Cole, visited the site of the 9-11 Memorial last week. He visited the memorial that is being constructed in memory of the civilians, first responders and military personnel who died that day. When completed, the 104-story tower will be known as the "Freedom Tower."

On a road trip out to Keystone, South Dakota, that my wife and I took in August, I got this shot of Mt. Rushmore. We later drove over to Devils Tower, Wyoming (that picture coming later).

The Barren County Marching Trojans were Grand Champions at the Caverna Colonel Marching Band Invitational on 9/8/12. As you can see they took first place in several areas!

People say the young are so foolish today. This is a picture of my grandfather, Ed Starr (on the right with pipe), and a friend being daring (foolish) in their younger days. Granddaddy was born in 1888.

Sparrow and Tree Frogs sounded great at Bounty of the Barrens Farmers' Market this morning.

Mike and Miki Padgett (Father and Son) spent a week in Costa Rica recently. Miki was raised in Costa Rica until age twelve while his parents were missionaries there. The two of them had a wonderful time reminiscing and visiting places they love in the “Switzerland of the Americas.” Mike is Pastor of Glasgow Bible Church and Miki is a contractor with the Department of Defense and the Department of State. Miki travels extensively with his job and will soon be leaving on another assignment.

Pastor Mike and Rosana Padgett celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on August 11. They have four children, two of which graduated from Glasgow High School. Mike has been pastor of Glasgow Bible Church for fifteen years and Rosana has served with Barren County Schools for fourteen years. They love Glasgow and Barren County. They are both originally from Nashville, Tennessee. They lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee; Summerville, Georgia; San Jose, Costa Rica; Cedar Brook, New Jersey; and Uniontown, Pennsylvania before coming to Glasgow.

I was sifting through some old family photos and found this postcard of the Snowball Dining Room located 267 feet underground in the heart of Mammoth Cave. This postcard was probably purchased at the Mammoth Cave Gift Shop back in 1949. It appears that there was a London Family Reunion on Tuesday, August 9th, 1949 and there were 51 family members present. I thought it was interesting.

Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library completed our third annual Adult Summer Reading program on July 31st . The theme for 2012 was “Between the Covers” as viewed on the front lawn. One of the programs we offered was “Making a Book Purse,” it was fun to see how each came up with a unique purse. The grand prize winners of the Kindle were Mr. Johnson, with his wife Sherry and Wanda Settle. Dollywood generously donated tickets to their theme park and Cindy Young was the lucky winner.

Just wanted to remind everyone that feeds hummingbirds, not to take the feeders down too early. It is generally recommended to maintain at least one feeder for a week or two after seeing your last hummingbird of the season. Sometimes an individual bird can't migrate on schedule, due to illness or injury. Late migrants in particular will appreciate having a reliable source of food at a time when few natural flowers are still in bloom (take a look at this really cool YouTube video).

Took this on Sunday afternoon as the wind blew so hard in Glasgow. The flag at Fort Williams was blowing in so many directions, but it was so pretty. Just wanted to share this with others. So proud to see that flag blowing in the wind, thankful for every solider that has fought and is still fighting for that flag.

We recently celebrated Jerry Hardison's birthday and the 50th anniversary of Glasgow Insurance Agency by presenting him with an anniversary banner. The agency was formed in 1962 and now has three generations of the family who are active in the business along with several long-term employees.

This was in the spring of 1949 at the Louisville Armory with the "Fabulous Five." UK beat Tennessee in the SEC. The Fabulous Five was the nickname of the 1947-'48 UK Men's Basketball Team. They won 36 of 39 games and were national collegiate champions. All five starters, along with Coach Adolph Rupp, were part of the gold medal-winning US Team at the Summer Olympics. The five players were Ralph Beard, Alex Groza, Wallace "Wah Wah" Jones, Cliff Barker and Kenny Rollins.

So proud of this group "Kids Run Eastern." Several from the newly formed running club from Eastern Elementary ran the Extreme Fitness 5K on Saturday. Way to go!

Mike Padgett recently took his eighty-one-year-old mother Billie Jean Padgett on a tour of Mammoth Cave National Park to see the beautiful fall leaves. They had lunch at the Mammoth Cave Hotel. Mrs. Padgett recently moved from her home in Nashville, Tennessee to live with Mike and Rosana in Glasgow.

The Barren County Marching Trojans took first place in class AA in preliminaries at MTSU's Contest of Champions 2012 in Murfreesboro, TN... and 7th place in the finals as well as the Kentucky Governor's Cup Trophy.

The Brents angel will be one of many stories included on the Historical Walking Tour of the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. The angel is part of the monument marking the resting places of Samuel Worley Brents and his wife Eliza Trigg who lived on the corner of South Green Street and Leslie Avenue in Glasgow. The tour will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 3 at the stone columns inside the cemetery.

This is Sam Anderson and his 1st place Jack-O-Lantern from last year about this time. Sam was a Cub Scout and this was the entry of Sam and his (proud) Dad. We all felt sorry for the little pumpkin that's being chewed on!

Shown in the photo is one of the local tree trimmers contracted to the EPB of the City of Glasgow. Why does your local utility spend what it does to trim trees?

Almost 7,000,000 people are without power now on the east coast. Much of that is due to flooding, but a significant amount is due to downed power lines because of uprooted trees and broken limbs. Here in Glasgow, most of our outages are caused by two things: trees and animals (especially squirrels).

Tree trimming is a "necessary evil." Back in 1994's ice storm, our neighbors in the Cave City area had the same storm Glasgow had, but a much shorter outage. Why? Because their utility, Kentucky Utilities, had a very strict tree trimming policy. If trees and tree limbs threatened utility lines, they were trimmed to lessen the potential for damage in high winds and freezing conditions. That's what the EPB does now, too.

We can all agree that trees that are radically trimmed are often uglier than nature intended. We can also agree that everyone, especially your EPB, hates outages. A thorough tree trimming program helps keep those outages to a minimum! Also, be cautious when driving, walking or cycling in an area where tree trimming is taking place. It's a dangerous place while this work is occurring.

The Red Cross Elementary 21st century Learning Community program, Mustang Corral, recently celebrated Lights On Afterschool. It is a nationwide event recognizing the critical need for quality afterschool programs. Programs like Mustang Corral keep kids safe, inspire learning and help working families. In addition to Red Cross's event, more than 7,500 programs participate in Lights On Afterschool. The attached photo is Bo Matthews, Jeff Moore, Carole Ann Manion, and Caralyne Wright, a representative from FRECC, a partner in the Mustang Corral program, signing a proclamation endorsing Lights On Afterschool and the Mustang Corral program that helps keep the lights on and doors open for all children after school.

In May of 1951 Glasgow native Billy Vaughan was serving as an assistant to Vice President Alben W. Barkley and arranged for The Veep to visit Glasgow where he was the Commencement speaker for Glasgow High School's graduation. The Vice President was feted as if royalty by many Glasgow and Barren County citizens. At the time Leonard W. Preston, shown above, was Barren County's State Representative and he presented a prize bull from his herd to Barkley as part of the festivities. The bull was sent to Barkley's farm in McCracken County.

Bruce Aspley was captured on film by J. Mitchell Ellis while passing some time at the Geo. J. Ellis Drug Company in downtown Glasgow in this photo. Aspley was a promoter of Glasgow in many ways but is remembered best for his family's role in entertaining local residents at his movie theatres. Aspley purchased and operated the Trigg Theatre (now the home of Herbert, Herbert, and Pack Attorneys) and he was the mastermind behind the construction and operation of the now-historic Plaza Theatre. His granddaughter, Emily, will be the featured speaker at the November 15 meeting of the South Central Kentucky Historical and Genealogical Society where she will tell the story of Bruce and the Plaza. The program will take place at 6 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre; you're invited!

Our members were invited to Rotary in honor of upcoming Children's Day on Nov. 20th. Our members spoke about their personal views of their Boys & Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County. They wanted the community to know how much they appreciated their support and in return that has inspired them to give back to their community. River, a senior at Barren County High School stated that he had been coming to the club since he was in elementary school. He stated that by coming to the club he received structure and it gave him "a purpose." Xander Jones, a 6th grader at Glasgow Middle School shared with everyone The Boys and Girls Club is like her family, giving her a safe place to hang out with her friends. Kristen Garmon, a Senior at Glasgow High School shared that she has been coming to the club since it opened and being a member of the club has shaped the person she has became today and that giving back is "a feeling that is indescribable."

Barren County Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) recently participated in the Barren County March for Babies, one of their many community service projects. FBLA members donated money to assist the other teams in raising over $23,000. For their efforts, Barren County FBLA was recognized as the Top Youth Team. Barren County FBLA members and advisers thank all who assisted by raising money for this community service project.

Attached are pictures of the Glasgow Scottie Band when they won 1st Place in the KMEA Class AA on Saturday, 10-27-12 at WKU Houchens Stadium. The Scottie Band has placed 1st in 2010, 4th in 2011, and 1st in 2012. Way to go, Scottie Band!

Bill, here are a couple of photos taken at Wayne Sexton’s recording studio in Cave City, as we were preparing for the most recent fundraising project, “Christmas Music for Morrison Park”. The top photo shows Wayne Sexton, left, who recorded all the performances, and made the project happen. Wayne Performs on the CD, as well as Sheila Atwell, and Randy Richardson (right).

In the bottom photo, Sheila records the song “A New Star Shining”, with Steve Owens accompanying her on guitar. Other performers on the CD include, Debi Simmons, Joy and Anthony Greer, Marshall Bailey, Judge Phil Patton, Dane Bowles, The Heavenly Heirs, Zina Beth, Greg, and Stanley Greer, along with several other performers and musicians. All proceeds from the sale go directly to the restoration efforts at Historic Morrison Park Holiness Camp Meeting Grounds, founded by the great Henry Clay Morrison, one of America’s most prominent ministers. Morrison is also featured on the CD, with an excerpt taken from a 1930 radio Address. The CD is now ready and available at Awards on the Square in downtown Glasgow.

The 34th annual Turkey Trot 5K Race was held Sunday, November 4th, at Beaver Trail with 73 runners in the 5K. Matt Read, 14-years-old, won his age and was the overall winner with a time of 19:10. Congratulations to all the walkers and runners; there were a total of 111 participants.

We recently visited Lincoln's Birthplace for a day of enjoyment. After leaving there we stopped on the square in Hodgenville to view statues of Abraham Lincoln, one as a child, the other an adult. In the area where the statues are parts of speeches he made in concrete. It was a windy cool day, but such a beautiful day to visit areas here in Kentucky. Our original plans was a short trip to the Smoky Mtns. However with Hurricane Sandy around we just stayed here in Kentucky. Enjoyable day spent in our "own backyard."

Here is a picture of the Ephraim Bales farm located near Gatlinburg, TN. As you snake along the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail just outside Gatlinburg, you come across this homestead. I can't imagine living and farming in the wilderness. They did have an excellent water source, but you still had to haul it from the creek to the house. People of that time lived much harder lives than we do today.

I would suggest to anyone going to Gatlinburg, TN to be sure to go on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. You just may see a bear!

Flyer promoting the Fort Thomas Highlands vs. Glasgow football game of 1929 in which Glasgow was victorious in becoming the first Glasgow team to win a state championship title (the 1928 was the first to make it to the final game of the state championship but was defeated). The 1929 team had a perfect winning season of 11-0. The game was held at Normal Stadium on the campus that would eventually become Western Kentucky University. A snow-covered field coupled with bitter winds brought only 400 spectators to the game. Glasgow defeated Fort Thomas Highlands 13-6 to become the Mythical State Champions. The 11 consecutive victories of the teams of 1928 and 1929 would be a record for another 45 years. One of the team members, Howard Peden, made the All-State First Team.

(upper) Audriel Dame is the four-month-old daughter of Jessica (Padgett) and Heath Dame. She's the granddaughter of Mike and Rosana Padgett.

(lower) This is Kenneth and Joyce Pace. Kenneth is a WW II vet. He is 89 years old and served in the Navy in WW II. He crossed the Atlantic several times escorting battleships and later ended up in the island south of Iwo Jima.

Mr. Anderson, wanted to share this picture of the surf breaking over a rock on Grand Turk Island last week. Grand Turk gained international attention in 1962 when John Glenn's Friendship 7 Mercury spacecraft landed in the vicinity of Grand Turk Island off the southeast shoreline. A replica of Friendship 7 is on display in Grand Turk. That picture was not nearly as pretty as this one of the surf :)

His dream complete, Mike Adams retires from Mammoth Cave

MAMMOTH, Ky. – Now that the Mammoth Cave visitor center is complete, Mike Adams, chief of interpretation at Mammoth Cave National Park, will hang up his Smoky Bear hat and retire.

“When I came to Mammoth Cave, I remember thinking that the guides carried the monumental responsibility of conveying the entire story of the Park to visitors,” said Adams. “There were no exhibits or visual aids to help people understand the cave. I am certain that people came and went from here without knowing of Green River or its underground tributaries. I had twenty years to think about how exhibits could enhance a guide’s talk. Pulling the exhibits together hasn’t seemed like work, but more like the fulfillment of a dream.”

“The new visitor center and its exhibits are a crowning accomplishment in Mike’s career,” said Superintendent Sarah Craighead. “Mike has been at Mammoth Cave since 1991, and planning and construction of the visitor center have consumed most of his time for the last three years. The outcome is tremendous. The building and exhibits will serve visitors for the next forty years.”

Adams started his National Park Service (NPS) career in 1973 when he was a college student at the University of California-Davis. He worked summers at Yosemite National Park while earning a bachelor’s degree (1978) in environmental planning and management. In 1980, Adams gained full-time employment at Yosemite in Mariposa Grove where he explained the natural history and shared John Muir stories with visitors.

“I think of my time at Yosemite as my formative years,” said Adams. “I grew up in and around natural areas, but this is where I fell in love with national parks.”

In 1986, Adams moved east to Great Smoky Mountains NP, to Oconoluftee on the North Carolina side of the park. There he helped visitors understand the history of Mingus Mill and the Mountain Farmstead.

For the last 21 years, Adams has served as the chief of interpretation at Mammoth Cave, managing a large staff of cave guides, a nationally recognized environmental education program, and more recently, the development of the new Park visitor center.

Adams grew up in Van Buren, Mo., where his father, Dorsey Adams, now deceased, worked at Ozark National Scenic Riverway as a resource manager. His mother, Kathleen Adams, still resides in Hot Springs, Ark. He graduated from Van Buren High School in 1970, and attended Southwest Missouri State University (1970-1972), and Juanita College, Pa., (1972-1973).

Adams has three grown children, from a previous marriage, and five grandchildren. He is married to Julie Gee; they have resided in Cave City for many years, where they were active members at the Cave City Methodist Church. Julie is presently living in Athens, Ohio, teaching nature interpretation at Hocking College. Adams will join her there upon his retirement.

“It has been a privilege to work at Mammoth Cave,” said Adams. “It is a great park staffed by good people.”

Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library is pleased to announce the opening on December 17, 2012, of “Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference.” This exciting new traveling exhibition for libraries introduces the role engineers play in our lives. The primary message of the exhibition is that engineers are real people who, through a creative and collaborative design process, arrive at practical, sustainable solutions to better meet human needs and create new technologies to solve problems. Only eight libraries throughout the United States were selected for this exhibit tour.

Discover Tech is presented in three parts: Engineering: Past, Present, and Future; High Tech/Low Tech; and Power Up! Creating a Sustainable Energy Future. It features a number of hands-on activities that will engage people of all ages. These include a three-person quiz game that allows participants to explore the engineering process while correcting misconceptions about what engineers really do, and a hands-on challenge in which visitors cooperate to build their own arch structure. At the Inventor’s Lab station, visitors can imagine they are engineers by experimenting with and making devices using circuit boards, batteries, motors, alarm switches and other electrical components. At the Solar Power station they can explore how a solar panel actually works. A state-of-the-art, 42” interactive touch table includes an activity called “Game Changers” that presents critical engineering problems based on the 14 Grand Challenges for Engineering.

Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference, a traveling exhibition for libraries, is part of the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) led by the Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning. Exhibit partners include the Lunar and Planetary Institute, the National Girls Collaborative Project, and the American Library Association. Discover Tech is supported through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Just thought I would drop you a picture of my recent trip to New York for the Hurricane Sandy relief effort. This picture was taken in the Rock A Way community . We were there to help in the restoration of natural gas services in this area as well as other affected areas. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to help , also I have come to realize that the things we take for granted each day are more important than we realize. Thank you for your time.

On December 8th, the Sunny 16 Photography Club participated in a nationwide event called Help-Portrait.

Help Portrait is a movement of photographers coming together across the world who use their photography skills to give back to members of their community who are less fortunate. Our club set up make-shift studios at the Christ Fellowship Church in Bowling Green. We photographed, edited and printed pictures and then gave each family a free framed portrait.

It was a heart touching day and we certainly received far more than we could ever give.

(upper) When tobacco reigned as the mainstay of Barren County agriculture, the harvesting and sale of the product was a familiar sight in the area. Many young Barren County youths had 4-H and FFA projects centered on tobacco, just as this young fellow did when he received a prize check from J.C. Downing who was serving as president of the Glasgow Rotary Club at the time.

(lower) The famous Carter Family performing at the Glasgow Tobacco Festival, a popular Barren County social event of years past.

The first Glasgow Christmas Parade in 1957 ended with the arrival of Santa Claus, as has remained the custom for 55 years. However, Santa's sleigh apparently didn't make the journey to Glasgow as he arrived riding in a sulky pulled by a Shetland pony. Glasgow businessman George Evans ably assisted Santa with the loan of his steed. The parade was first organized under the auspices of the Jaycee's/Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Glasgow Rotary Club was honored to have Mrs. Claus read a poem to the attendees on December 20. The kids, young and old, enjoyed the visit!

The 3rd place entry was Temple Hill High School's human Christmas tree.

This a picture of a pair of eagles that landed in our back yard next to Cypress Creek here in Florence, AL. I guess they were on a little fishing trip. Paula was watching a group of geese drift by when the raptors arrived. The geese made a very loud and hasty retreat for some reason. Guess they didn't feel like sharing the creek. Have a great day.

This is the fourth year that PINK OUT has been expanded to include not only our entire school district but also our community. It is Barren County Schools desire to bring awareness to the devastation that cancer can cause and to assist with funding research to find a cure for this deadly disease. This real-photo postcard of the Bowen tobacco patch was made in the early 20th century. Interestingly, this tobacco patch was located on East Main Street at what is now Bowen Avenue and May Street. The house in the background was the home of the Bowen family at the time of this photograph but many years earlier it was used as one of Glasgow's early schools.
