Mr. Anderson,
I'm a Glasgow resident who is currently going to school at Georgia Tech. I'm studying abroad this summer, and have visited eight countries so far on the trip with about five weeks left to go. Here's a picture I took while traveling of the Old Square in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. A big soccer tournament (the Eurocup) was going on at the time, and all the people were gathering around a large screen setup to show the game. It was an amazing experience to see all those people in one place supporting their team, even though they lost!
Thanks,

Teach a man to fish and you’ll be lucky to get another days’ work out of him”?

Mammoth Dome Tower is new and improved
(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – July 10, 2008) Mammoth Cave National Park completed a unique fixer-upper project this year – replacing the Mammoth Dome tower and stairs. The 53-year-old, 65-foot tower is a connector route between the lower-Historic cave trail and the upper-Historic cave trail, allowing the 2-mile, 2-hour Historic tour to be a loop route with minimal retracing. The new stainless steel structure serves the same purpose, but is broader and more visitor-friendly.
“This was a huge undertaking and a tremendous accomplishment for the park,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed. “We are very pleased with the finished product. It is more than just a stairway; it greatly enhances the visitor’s experience.”
Any construction project inside Mammoth Cave is a story of logistics. Let’s start with the list of materials:
1,350 eighty-pound bags of concrete;
3,500 stainless steel bolts; and
35,000 pounds of structural steel, varying in length from 2 to 21 feet.
Materials were trucked to the cave entrance, hand-carried down 60 steps, loaded on a custom-made “cave wagon”, wheeled through large-to-increasingly-smaller passageways for over a quarter mile, then maneuvered through Crevice Pit (the size of a standard doorway) and lowered 200’ to the floor of Mammoth Dome.
“Moving the materials was a challenge and terribly time consuming,” said Steve Kovar, facility management chief, who oversaw the work. “And, the contractor had to redesign the lower steps to fit the cave walls and overhanging rock, and modify the tower foundation to avoid displacing a 20-foot boulder. Its completion is truly monumental.”
During construction, personnel time averaged 15 people per day, in 10-hour shifts.
Before the contractor, Lyca Construction, Inc., of Louisville, Ky., could even start the new construction, the old tower and concrete steps had be to dismantled and removed – up and out through Crevice Pit, wheeled on the cave wagon, and carried up the 60 steps at the entrance. During the four days of demolition in January 2008, the crews worked two 10-hour shifts per day.
“Mammoth Dome is an awesome room,” said Mike Adams, chief of interpretation at the park. “The old tower was merely a conveyance. The new tower provides an amazing view of the cave. It will ‘wow’ our visitors. The larger staircase was designed with safety in mind, too. Previously, if we had to carry someone out of the cave, we had to haul a stretcher up the steps with the head or foot extending beyond the handrail. A stretcher will now fit between the rails.”
The $2 million project began January 2008 and was completed April 15, 2008. |

Bill,
Since February, we have had the pleasure of watching a pair of red-tailed hawks build a nest, lay eggs and raise their young in a large tree in our backyard.
The babies have grown into two beautiful birds! The pictures I'm sending show the juvenile hawks making their daily visit our porch behind our house. They love to sit on the fence and from all indications, are not very afraid of people. I hope everyone enjoys the pictures.

My in-laws, Charles and Joyce Reece in Wisdom Kentucky have the most beautiful gardens every year. Here is one of their gardens for 2008. And yes, they are VERY long rows. This one contains horticulture beans, green beans, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes - as well as some zinnias and marigolds along the front. Their orchard has been very productive this year. Here is one of the "horse apple trees" Charles grafted and is now loaded with fruit.
Also, a strong thunderstom cell passed thru Edmonton/Metcalfe county this afternoon (Tuesday, July 22) causing quite a bit of strong wind. Are you interested and willing to help a homeless deserving dog at your local Glasgow-Barren County Animal Shelter?
Here is a way that you can help make some homeless deserving puppy or dog more comfortable during his stay with us. Some have been mistreated, neglected, or just not wanted, so they come in scared, suspicious, and afraid to relax for fear of the same treatment they have known. They need love, trust, and a comfortable place where they can just be themselves.
For price of a cup of coffee or two a day you can link up with Kuranda’s “Donate A Bed” program which enables individuals to donate beds to the shelter of their choice at discounted prices. Just select the shelter or rescue below and follow the instructions.
The dog you will see enjoying her comfortable Kuranda Bed, is Samantha, one of our own homeless dogs at your Glasgow-Barren County Shelter.

NEW OWNER OF HISTORIC "OLD REB" HOME IN GLASGOW MAKES PRESENTATION
On Tuesday, July 29, A. Jay Howard of Marshall Equity Specialists in Battle Creek, Michigan graciously made a presentation to Glasgow and Barren County to honor the memory of John A. Murray, a community leader in the early 1900's. A sign bearing the likeness and name of John Murray has been erected in front of the home.
The "Old Reb" home located on the corner of South Green and College Streets was built in 1908 and its owner, John Murray, was known as "Old Reb." He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was a fierce fighter for Southern causes. He is credited for having the statue of Johnny Reb erected on the courthouse grounds. Described as one of Glasgow's more colorful politicians, he served as Barren County Court Clerk during the early 1900's. It is told in local history books that Mr. Murray, always the astute politician, would visit the schools of the county and give each child a candy stick.
Murray's insurance business brought him to Glasgow in 1869. Soon after his arrival he met Eugenia Garnett, granddaughter of Richard Garnett. They were married in 1870. While they had no children of their own, they took an active interest in the welfare and entertainment of local children. It is reported that annual Murray children's picnics were attended by thousands of Barren County children.
During a visit to Glasgow, Mr. Howard saw the house and was intrigued by the story of John A. Murray. He discovered that the house was for sale by Dr. L. G. Dickinson. Soon, Mr. Howard became the owner of the property. The building has been renovated while maintaining its historic value and is currently available for lease as office space. For more information, call Randy Gibbons at Coldwell Banker at 646-0429.

I'm sending you two pictures of Laura. One is of her and me in D.C. a couple of days before she met her exchange teacher. She teaches Spanish to K-1 at Lockland Elementary in Nashville. She applied for and was chosen to be a Fulbright exchange teacher for this school year. She will go to Mexico in a couple of weeks and teach elementary school English to her exchange teacher's class. Her exchange (Yuri) will teach Spanish in Laura's room in Nashville. There is a lot of work that goes into this after a teacher is chosen to go and she's been working on it for months. You can imagine the paperwork and then there's finding housing for your teacher, sending her info re: your classroom, your city, your country!
A couple of weeks before school starts, they bring all of the exchange teachers to D.C. for a week's time to learn more about the experience and to get to know one another. Laura and I took a long week-end there before the others arrived. It was so good to have that time together before she leaves for 10 months.
Thanks for your consideration and I'm sure Yuri will be excited to send her family her picture from the Glasgow website!

1st Annual Walk in the Park at Mammoth Cave is a tremendous success!
Saturday, October 11, was a beautiful day at Mammoth Cave National Park. With clear blue skies, a slight breeze, and the beginning change of leaves, the 1st Annual Walk in the Park event had a great kickoff.
Lajuana Wilcher, chairperson for the Friends of Mammoth Cave NP, was pleasantly surprised with the outing’s attendance: “We thought that if we had 70 people show up for our first event, we would be pleased. Therefore, you can imagine our excitement when we had 145 people participate in our walk.”
“I talked to a couple from Mississippi who had seen the walk advertised on the internet and decided to time their visit to Mammoth Cave National Park to coincide with the Walk in the Park,” said Bill Goodman from Lexington, board member and co-chair for the fundraising event.
“We wanted an event that would enlighten the public about some of the assets of Mammoth Cave National Park like the newly dedicated Mammoth Cave Railroad Bike & Hike Trail. At the same time, we wanted to promote health and fitness amongst our participants,” said Ben Quinn of Glasgow, board member and co-chair of the special events fundraising committee for the Friends Group. “The 1st Annual Walk In The Park was a way for our entrants to enjoy the beautiful Mammoth Cave National Park landscape and improve
their fitness, while at the same time contributing to the enhancement of the Park and helping preserve it for many years to come.”

We decorate our Halloween pumpkins, play games, bust a pinata (this year by Charlie Wood), eat supper, make s'mores, and judge the pumpkins. Each year the pumpkins are judged by those had the pumpkins judged "Best of Show" the previous year. Our judges this year were Jodi Crane, Emmalee Lawrence and Bennett Pack. Our winners this year who will judge next year were Chris Witt, Tanner York, Addison Reynolds, and Ella Kate Lawrence. In fairness, since all of the pumpkins are absolutely fabulous, they all get great prizes. Twenty-one families joined us this year represented by the 42 awesome kids in the picture! A spook-tacular time was had by all!

Hi Bill!
Last Sunday, Bruce Travis and I took an early afternoon flight over Barren County, and it was absolutely beautiful! The attached picture is a shot of my brother, Clay Chase, and my father, Everett Chase’s tobacco. This year they are raising 100 acres. This picture shows the scaffolds on Clay’s farm that are holding part of their crop; this was definitely an impressive sight from the air! Some of the tobacco was uncovered in preparation for stripping, while the rest remained covered in black plastic. Thanks for letting me share. I’m very proud of their hard work and dedication to farming in this region.

(upper photo) Mike Padgett sent us this photo and writes:
The beautiful colors of fall in Barren County Kentucky surround “The Colors” of our nation. During these holidays, let us not forget our military and their continual sacrifice for our freedoms and for the beauty of our landscapes here at home.
Most or our military are in areas that are dark and dreary right now. They serve in cold wet climates during this season with sand and rain. No beautiful landscape where they drive in harms way. No walks in the park for them. Many of them risk their lives just going to the “chow hall” two or three times a day as enemy projectiles come close to them.
My son Miki is in Iraq right now. He has been there off and on for three years now. Remember him as you remember so many others from Glasgow-Barren County.

Becky Reece sent us this photo and writes:
The Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting to celebrate the new location of Barren River Area Safe Space on West Front Street. The Barren River Area Safe Space, Inc is a regional domestic violence shelter and program founded in 1980. For over 28 years, domestic violence services have been available, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. The agency operates two 24 hour crisis lines, which are often the first step for women in abusive relationships to seek help, safety and ultimately a better life.
The mission of BRASS, Inc. is to ensure that the victims of domestic violence and their children live free from any form of domestic abuse and that their rights are valued, protected and defended. The primary domestic violence service provider in the region, BRASS, Inc. is committed to ending the trauma and devastation of domestic violence and promoting peace in Kentucky's homes.
Our crisis lines have been recognized by the National Domestic Violence Hotline and have received a "Best Practice" Award from the KDVA, due to our advocates answering an average 485 calls monthly. The crisis lines are (800) 928-1183 or 843-1183.
Branches of the Barrens, an outreach office of BRASS, Inc. is located at 102 West Front Street. At Branches of the Barren, victims of domestic violence can get help with the following services: legal advocacy, individual and group counseling, food assistance (food pantry), housing assistance, and referral services. Branches of the Barren is also a drop off location for BRASS, Inc.'s "Cell Phone for Safety" program. If you have an old, unused cell phone, drop it off, and BRASS Inc. can recycle that phone to help fund our victim's services. The Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce is an alternate location for dropping off old cell phones. |

Kelly Longo sent us these and writes:
Local Girl Scout troops participated in a “Promise to Vote” campaign on Saturday, Nov.1st , here in Barren County. The girls had booths at various businesses in our community in hopes of encouraging people to make it out to the poles on November 4th. The right to vote is the basic privilege that allows Americans the freedoms that we enjoy.
We are often only known for our cookies? However, Girl Scouts have a history of being known for service and civic contributions to their communities. We just wanted to share with everyone an example of some of the things that we do. We knew that if we could encourage people to recognize that this right is a responsibility to act on, that we would be making a difference.
The girls also earned a badge for participating in this event. We would like to recognize Houchens, Bluegrass Cellular, YMCA, George J Ellis, Lowe’s, and K-Mart for allowing us the opportunity to make this event possible. Thanks you!

Grandparents are Debby Browning and the late Jackie Browning, Gerald and Donnie Kidd, Barry and Donna Symons, and Bill and Linda Nesbitt. Thanks for letting me share.

Emma and Hanna Barker enjoying the first snow of the season here in Westminster, Maryland. We wanted to wish all of our family and friends in Glasgow a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Oh yeah, and just wanted to say that we are sad that we missed the Chistmas parade. We have lived many places and haven't seen a parade that compares to the Glasgow parade yet. Keep up all the hard work. |

The Park City Lions Club Christmas Parade was held Saturday Dec. 6th. This was also Deputy Mike’s birthday. He didn’t say how old he was, he did have to have help getting out of the car! Judge Greer makes a great Santa, doesn’t she?

Hello Mr. Anderson!
We thought that you might like to post this picture on the Glasgow website. It is of our 8-month-old, Braxton Carnes, one night in front of his grandparents' Christmas tree. Considering this is Braxton's first Christmas he is totally fascinated with all of the lights and other Christmas decorations... Christmas through the eyes of a child... what a blessing!
Thank you,
Evan and Tara Carnes (parents) |

Santa came by our house tonight to make sure our kids were being good and they were so surprised! Needless to say he thought they had been pretty good this year and he told them he would return in a few days to leave them some goodies under the tree. Now my kids, Paige, Briley, Sam, & Bailey are super excited to see what he brings them. I hope they can continue to be good for a few more days!

The Girl Scouts of Barren County held a Christmas Extravaganza Program at Austin-Tracy Elementary School on Saturday, December 13th. All the girls had a lot of fun participating in this event! They made different crafts and also made Christmas cards to send to our injured soldiers at an Army hospital in Maryland. They also sang Christmas carols, had pizza and got to try the new Girl Scout cookie this year (Dulce de Leche). As you can see, Santa came and talked with the girls and they had the opportunity to get their picture made with him.
Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this possible (Troops 174, 232, 270, 503, 2088 and 2368). Special thanks to Buck Bryant, Mr. Scott Harper, principal at Austin-Tracy Elementary School and Georgette Lee.
*** For all of you wondering, Girl Scout cookie sales begin January 1st! ***
Thanks,
Kelly Longo

Here is a picture I couldn't pass up sending.. Here is a picture of my husband "clowning" around. Johnny dressed up and took balloons to Betty Proffitt at Just for Kids for one of her
milestone birthdays one day in November. Betty was pretty much speechless to say the least! So, you just NEVER know who may show up on your birthday.....
