Hey Bill!
Greetings from the "Ville" as we lovingly call it (Hustonville, that is)! We have been here for 6 months, but our new house never felt as much like home as when we had all the kids here with us for Christmas. Thomas was on leave from Luke AFB in Glendale, AZ, and Katharine, Dennis & Carson still live in Horse Cave. We wish all our 'family friends' in Glasgow a very Happy New Year!

Attached is a picture of us all, after several takes we kept this one. Carson wanted to move so I was looking to make sure he was still in Katharine's lap! At least I am smiling!

Take care!

Trip to Green Bay
Picture Featured:    January 11, 2009 Trip to Green Bay
George Katchak sent us these and writes:
My son, Patrick, invited me to go to see a Green Bay Packer game in Wisconsin, December 28th. It was the game between the Packers and the infamous Detroit Lions. It was unfortunate for the Lions, as they finished the season 0-16. An unpopular record to have in the NFL. At game time, it was a bit chilly, 22 degrees with wind of 20-30mph. The day before, the northern midwest had a big warm up. Early the morning of the game, the temperatures dropped into the teens with freezing rain and some snow. Everything was coated with a crusty mixture of snow and ice. There are no chairbacks in Lambeau. We had to scrape the bleacher benches to see the numbers so we could find our proper seat. Anouncements at the games were a bit unusual. One before the game included no throwing snowballs. In the pictures, you will see Patrick and me at our seats. Look carefully and you will see the snow and ice on the benches. The other is of myself with the statue of the legendary Vince Lombardi. By the way we did arrive Lombardi early.

Friends since Age 4
Picture Featured:    January 25, 2009 Friends since Age 4
Marsha Thomas sent us this photo and writes:
Here is a picture my son Logan Thomas and his childhood friend, Samantha Yelton from North Carolina. They met when they were 4 years old at Glasgow Baptist Church Preschool, he and "Sam" became fast friends then and had many "play dates", way back when. When they were 5, Samantha and her family moved back home to North Carolina. We continued correspondence, and when they were 5, we went there once to see them and they came back here to visit in the fall of 2000, that was the last time they had seen one another in person. After losing touch for a few years we recently were blessed to have them reenter our lives. The 2 "kids" couldn't wait to see one another again, and they picked right back up where they left off 9 years ago. They had a great visit and both of them pouted when it came time for us to come home. If all goes well they will be coming here to visit with us in a couple of months. Sonya (Sam's mom) and I both loved this picture and just wanted to share it.

Sandhill Cranes Part of Nature Watch Weekend Feb. 27-28 at Barren River Lake
LUCAS, Ky. – Barren River Lake State Resort Park will hold a nature watch weekend on Feb. 27-28 as Sandhill cranes migrate through the area. Each year thousands of Sandhill cranes make Barren River Lake a stop on their journey from Florida to the upper Midwest. The park is holding guided tours to allow guests to get up close to these beautiful cranes and learn more about them.

The weekend will consist of a program on the natural history of Sandhill cranes, conducted by Wayne Tamminga, a certified wildlife biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, on Friday, Feb. 27 at 7:00pm. On Saturday, participants can register for an early morning van trip and short hike to the winter pool backwater of Peters Creek to visit a roosting area or an afternoon van tour with a series of stops to various feeding/roosting sites along Highway 31-E and surrounding areas. Guests interested in both tours can pay an additional $10 fee if space is available.

Each of these trips will be lead by naturalists and biologist from the Kentucky Department of Parks and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

Registration is $20 per person ($10 for children 12 and under) and includes the evening session, a morning or afternoon field trip, transportation and snacks. Registration forms are available online at or by contacting Parks Program Services Supervisor Lisa Deavers at 800-325-0057 or (Please note that the dates selected are based on historical records under normal weather conditions at the end of February and past trends of the crane’s arrival to this area. Please be aware that this narrow window of opportunity can vary by several days based on weather and the crane’s migration schedule).

Business After Hours at the Plaza
Picture Featured:    February 01, 2009 Business After Hours at the Plaza
Becky Reece sent us this photo and writes:
On January 22, the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting and Business After Hours for the newly renovated offices of the Plaza Theatre, located at 115 East Main Street.

The new offices of the Plaza Theatre are located in the historic Grinstead Building immediately adjacent to the Plaza Theatre. Originally Grinstread's Grocery, then a dress shop, and ultimately Bowle's Print and Gift Shop, the space has been renovated to match the decor and era of the Plaza and the original building. The new space houses two offices, a catering kitchen, a photocopier/file room, a reception/ticketing area, and a large meeting area. Additionally, the basement has been renovated to give the Plaza much needed storage space.

For the first 3 1/2 years of operation, the Plaza offices were a small corner of space behind the concession stand in the lobby and a card table by the stage. With this renovation, operations at the Plaza can continue at a more professional, organized, and comfortable manner. The space includes a restored true tin ceiling, as well as other historical renovations.

For more information about the Plaza, call 361-2101 or visit their Website at

Helping Hands in Ohio County

Dallas Arosteguy sent us these and writes:
Helping Hands - Ice Storm January, 2009 - Volunteer Relief Aid - Ohio County, Kentucky

On February 7th, 2009 a local church, The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, along with the area’s Branches and Wards of the Church sent a volunteer relief force to aid Ohio County, KY . The one day relief effort consisted of about 150 church members along with others.

The relief action was directed to the residents of Hartford, KY and surrounding communities due to the heavy ice damage causing downed trees. The request for assistance was generated by Church members in some of the hardest hit areas of Paducah and sounding areas of Western Kentucky. Within a few days of the request for aid the Madison, TN Stake of the Latter-Day Saints with its church wards and branches to include Glasgow, Sulphur Well, Bowling Green, and Tompkinsville all sent a contingency of volunteer force of workers to aid in the clean-up.

Upon arrival to Hartford, KY the Ohio County Hospital served was the staging area for the community disaster relief work on Saturday. The hospital offered all the volunteer Church workers a quick breakfast and tetanus shots to all workers who wished.

The sum members of the group then dispersed to the community and rural areas to start the clean up efforts with pre planed locations provided by the Ohio County Hospital. The workers all wearing the recognizable Yellow Shirt - “Mormon Helping Hands” then dispersed throughout the communities. During the day long event many local restaurants that were operational offered food discounts for the volunteers should they want, such as Dairy Queen and others. One small operational gas/food store gave free hamburgers to a group who stopped to purchase water. The overall reaction of the affected community was one of much gratitude and thanks! One member of the Glasgow Branch remarked that it took about six telephone calls and approximately 72 hours to have the Madison, TN Stake with its wards and branches mobilized and at the work site! Truly a remarkable task with today bureaucracies.

Hiseville Elementary School recognized for outstanding achievement
Feb. 19, 2009 – Hiseville Elementary was honored to receive a visit from members of the Kentucky Department of Education for its outstanding performance on the CATS test for the 2007-2008 school year. On Thursday, February 19th, Principal John Stith and members of the Hiseville Leadership Team led Claude Christian and Mike Douglas, representatives from the Department of Education, on a tour of Hiseville School.

Mr. Christian is the Student Services Branch Manager for the Division of Federal Programs and Instructional Equity at the Department of Education. He is visiting only a select number of schools that have demonstrated high academic achievement along with making significant gains in closing the achievement gap. The goal of the visit is to learn more about the practices, policies, programs, people, and strategies that have been implemented to close achievement gaps. Hiseville School was one of 37 schools across the state that achieved this distinct honor by scoring an academic index above 92.5 and by reducing the gap between the general student population and the subpopulations of students as designated by the state requirement by more than four points. Hiseville Elementary School was also the only school in Barren County qualifying for this distinction.

“We are proud to share with others the great work that we do here at Hiseville Elementary School. We have a dedicated and hard working staff that challenges students to do their very best,” said Principal Stith. For more information on the strategies being used to help students achieve at high levels, contact Hiseville Elementary School at 453-2611. The staff would be honored to showcase their instructional strategies and share information regarding the best practices in education.

In the photos: Claude Christian and Mike Douglas from the Department of Education, along with superintendent of Barren County Schools, Dr. Jerry Ralston, toured Hiseville Elementary School on Thursday, February 19, 2009.

Students in Mrs. Anne Johnson’s 3rd grade class are visited by the leadership team and representatives from the state.

Last year I posted a picture of two hawks that grew up in my back yard. This picture is the female who spent a lot of time on our fence and as you can see is very photogenic. It is now March and I'm happy to say that my breeding pair have returned and are nesting again. I have been watching since early Feb as they have been repairing their nest which somehow survived all the winter ice and windstorms. The female is now spending a lot of time on the nest and her partner is spending a lot of time tending to her... As the new brood develops, I hope to post more pictures throughout the year for all the bird lovers out there.

Mammoth Cave National Park Superintendent Patrick Reed (left) accepts the Superintendent of the Year for Natural Resource Stewardship from Acting NPS Deputy Director Ernie Quintana at the George Wright Society conference in Portland, Oregon.

(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – March 11, 2009) “I was surprised and honored,” said Reed, who has led the park since 2006. “It has been my experience that when managers and leaders of any organization are recognized it is because they have been lifted up by their staff and partners. I have to extend this honor to my staff as well. It is truly a shared recognition with the science and resource management staff at Mammoth Cave, the Mammoth Cave International Center for Science and Learning, and outstanding partners such as Western Kentucky University, the Cave Research Foundation, the National Speleological Society and many others.”

Acting National Park Service Director Dan Wenk announced the recipients of the 2008 Director’s Awards for Natural Resource Stewardship. The annual awards, established in 1989, honor significant natural resource accomplishments in six categories, one of them being Superintendent of the Year for Natural Resources Stewardship.

Wenk said, “The award winners and their achievements reinforce the idea that every National Park Service employee, regardless of job title or description, can truly make a difference in the preservation of natural resources. Their work represents the diversity of resource management projects taking place in parks throughout the country.”

At Mammoth Cave, to better manage the park’s world-class natural resources, Reed established a collaborative framework for science-informed decision making, which includes dissemination of scientific research to park staff, other NPS areas, area citizens, academic and government partners, and international constituents.

“As the world’s longest known cave and one of the most diverse karst regions in the world, Mammoth Cave’s next step is to reach out to other nations to share research, techniques, and knowledge,” Reed continued. “Western Kentucky University and the Hoffman Institute are outstanding partners and we are presently working with them and the Mammoth Cave International Center for Science and Learning in developing a partnership arrangement with the Karst Institute in Slovenia and a sister park arrangement with Libo Zhangjiang National Park in southern China (part of a three park World Heritage Site). Mammoth Cave is also pursuing a partnership arrangement with the Altamira National Museum and Research Centre in northern Spain, a World Heritage Site known internationally for its outstanding Paleolithic cave art.”

The preschool students at Hiseville Elementary School built their own tic-tac-toe games after completing a unit on construction and tools. With materials supplied by Lowe’s, the students were able to hammer together their own game boards, but not without gearing up with safety gear first! The students carefully put on their safety goggles and Lowe’s aprons before beginning their work. With a little help from the volunteers from Lowe’s and using the directions, the students used the pieces of their kit to construct the game. The students were able to use child-size hammers to put the boards together. This project helped the students see how materials are used to make a finished project.

Many thanks to Lowe’s for providing this opportunity for the students at Hiseville Elementary. A special thank you to Lisa and Larry from Lowe’s for their assistance with this project.

This little Eastern Bluebird seems to be telling me to leave and quit bothering her while she is trying to hatch five little blue eggs...

Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot - Spring, 2009
Picture Featured:    May 20, 2009 Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot - Spring, 2009
The WebMeister got this collage of photos...
The Anderson family went to the semi-annual "Machine Gun Shoot" at Knob Creek Gun Range in early April. The range itself used to be owned by the military and Fort Knox used it for their big guns. For years it's been privately owned as an outdoor shooting range and gun shop. Twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall, the range hosts about 15,000 Second Amendment enthusiasts, patriots in general and even people who've traveled all the way from Europe. Although these types of events are held in different places around the country, this one is the largest of them all. It's pretty cool to see fully automatic weapons fired (as you are probably aware, they've been tightly regulated since 1934). It was a lot of fun.

(clockwise) In the photos, on the far left is Dean Anderson, then Sam & Bill, Bill & Rita, Kelly & Juanita, and finally Rita, Sam & Kelly. If you go in early October, make sure to take your hearing protection! (you'll need it every so often)

A group from Glasgow goes to the Indy 500 every year and I was lucky enough to join the fun to "The Greatest Spectacle in racing" this year. Here are a few photos from the 2009 Indy 500.

1) Upper left: The infamous Gasoline Alley and Pagoda. Gasoline Alley is the last chance for a fan to get a glimpse a his/her favorite driver before they get to the starting grid and pit lane. The Pagoda has been a focal point of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and has gone through many changes since 1913. It is used to house race control, timing and scoring, and media for races at IMS.

2) Upper right: This is a few from which we sat on the day of the 2009 Indy 500. You can see the tall pylon that is used to track the top drivers in the race on the left. The main grandstands are on the right. You can also see the rear of the starting field on the track. The photo was taken from "Turn 4."

3) Lower left: This is a photo of the Starting Field from "Turn 4" before they head down the front straight to take the "Green Flag."
(Right to left):
1st Row: Helio Castroneves (Pole Position), Ryan Briscoe, Dario Franchitti
2nd Row: Graham Rahal, Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan
3rd Row: Mario Moraes, Marco Andretti, Will Power
4th Row: Danica Patrick, Alex Lloyd, Raphael Matos
5th Row: Paul Tracy, Vitor Meira, Justin Wilson

4th) Lower right: Helio Castroneves was the winner of the 93rd running of the Indy 500. Average lap speeds were running over 220mph.

Thanks to everyone on this trip and for making it alot of fun.
