Vickie Carson sent us this photo and writes:
Jim Carroll retires from Mammoth Cave National Park
(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – January 7, 2008) Jim Carroll considers his last years at Mammoth Cave National Park as the most important in his 38-year federal career. As chief of the External Programs Division, Carroll has forged solid relationships with park neighbors, elected officials, tourism professionals, and Congressional representatives.

“Jim is leaving us, but he is leaving the park well connected with its constituents,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed. “His career has spanned law enforcement, safety, interpretation, concessions management, and for the last twelve years, building relationships with our park friends and advocates. Jim will be missed, but he has established a sound foundation that we will continue to build upon.”

Carroll began his park service career in 1972 as a seasonal guide at Mammoth Cave.

What’s next for Carroll? He and his wife, Sina will continue management and upkeep of their nine rental properties – but during the week instead of on weekends. Regarding weekends, Carroll said: “I look forward to getting the ’67 GTO out for some serious pleasure driving, and we’ll no doubt make a few trips to Lexington.” Their daughter, Hannah, 19, is a sophomore at the University of Kentucky and a seasonal guide at Mammoth Cave.

Andrea Sadler sent us this photo and writes:
Hafa Adai... means Hello in Chamorro. Here is one of my many pictures of Guam where I lived from 2002-2004, that I wanted to share with everyone back home. Guam, is an island in the Western Pacific Ocean & is an organized unincorporated territory of the U.S. The island of Guam is approximately 30 miles in lenght with a variable width, ranging from 12 miles to 4 miles at its narrowest point.

Here is a picture of Fort Nuestra Senora De La Soldad, "Our Lady of Solitude" located in the village of Umatac. Fort Nuestra Senora de la Soledad was one of the last Spanish forts constructed in the 19th Century in support of the Spanish Galleon trade. The fort was built during the 300 years that the Spanish occupied Guam. The harbor in Umatac is where Magellan landed in 1521. The fort was restored in 1995 and today the cannon of Fort Soledad still point out over the Pacific Ocean & Umatac Bay. If anyone would like to learn more about Guam & its beauty, here is a great website to start off at...

I hope everyone has a great day & God bless,

What Public Servants Look Like
Picture Featured:    February 02, 2008 What Public Servants Look Like
This is from The Red, Blue & Green, a local blog about the EPB...
The term "public servant" is often over used and perhaps even hard for most to grasp, but here is a picture of some real ones. In this picture, taken at 1:00 on Friday, February 1, members of the EPB team are making repairs to a 69,000 volt transmission line just off 31E near the Cumberland Parkway. The temperature with wind chill is about 15. At the top of the seventy foot pole, it is closer to 5 degrees. They are doing this in an attempt to keep the 15,000 folks in Glasgow warm.

The transmission line is one of three such lines that feed the city of Glasgow. During the storm of November 5, this section of line was heavily damaged and had been taken out of service until it could be completely repaired. Then came the storms of January 29. That night both of the other two lines feeding Glasgow were also damaged and could only be repaired with temporary solutions. Thus, since the winds and storms seem to be never ending, these guys are rushing up repairs on the originally damaged section so we can switch the whole city to it while other repairs are made to the sections damaged on Tuesday night. Hopefully, if they can hold out against the winds and cold long enough, we will get this switching done and reinforce Glasgow's electric power grid a bit for the weekend. In a way I hate for everyone to know how vulnerable our power grid is right now, but I do want everyone to know that these brave craftsmen are the only thing standing between warmth and cold in Glasgow right now, and if they do their work well, no one will even think about where their warmth comes from.

Such is the nature of public servants like these and many more in our community. When they do their work well, they become invisible. Everyone just assumes that these servants and the ultimate servant, electric power, are just like oxygen. . . it is just there and no one really knows how it gets there. Where the truth is, that it takes brave folks like these, who are few, who are cold, who are tired from spending several nights fighting the elements, and who are human just like the 15,000 folks benefiting from their labor. If you are with friends this weekend enjoying the Super Bowl, take a few minutes to think about these guys and the work they did to make your gathering a possibility.

The Glasgow Christian Academy Beta Club participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring during the past week. Super Bowl Sunday is often a time to gather with friends and eat plenty of food. The GCA Beta Club is aware that some people will not even have a bowl of soup to eat on that day. During the past week, they brought the Souper Bowl of Caring to their school and challenged the students at Glasgow Christian Academy to help those in need. The project was a huge success and over 690 items were donated to help those at God's Appalachain Partnership (GAP). Pictured in the photo are some of Glasgow Christian Academy's Beta students surrounding John and Melanie Austin and their son, Dillon. The Austins are mission coordinators at the GAP. George Katchak sent us these and writes:
Some of the boys of the family traveled over the Valentine's weekend to Grand Forks, North Dakota to see college hockey played at its finest. We saw, through the generosity of the North Dakota University President, Chuck Kupchella and his wife Adele two of the best hockey games that you can immagine. By the way the Kupchellas are the in-laws of former Glasgow High School graduate Stacy Branham. North Dakota Univerity's Fighting Souix played and won two games against Denver University's Pioneers. Both games were hard fought but ultimately the Fighting Souix prevaled. Our trip there was quite unusual. We left here on Valentine's Day the temperature was in the 40's and when we arrived at Grand Forks the temperature was -20 degrees at the airport. 60 degree drops in the same day can be painful. It did manage to heat up to 30 degrees on Saturday as you can tell in the picture with open coats and jerseys. Again our thanks to the Kupchellas for their excellant hospitality. In the pictures you will find Patrick Katchak, Kan Klein, and John Klein all bundled up on Friday night(the coldest). The other is of myself and John Klein, my grandson on Saturday for the second game when the temperature got up to a balmy 30 degress.

GO SOUIX, See you in the final four in Colorado in April. Our thanks again to North Dakota University and the Kupchellas.

Great Commission Ministries

Bernard Francis sent us this photo and writes:
The Great Commission Ministries had a wonderful opportunity to place a computer to a family of nine. The ministry has focused on a educational gap called the “digital divide.” We believe that if we can help our youth become mindful of their education by giving away computers and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our ministry got in touch with the Summers through a family that we have given assistance to in the past. This particular computer was donated by the First Presbyterian Church and we took the computer and had it updated by Affordable PC. On Saturday, March 15, we gave the computer to the Summers family and invited them to join me (Barrett Wright) for church service. Doran Summers and his son Lajuan Smith attended church service at the First Baptist Church where they expressed their gratitude to the ministry and the Church. The Ministry is more than humbled to do what we can to try to make a difference in our community. If you are interested in helping this ministry you can visit our website, and find out what you can do to aid this ministry.

It was so enjoyable watching the students participate in dance and to see Dr. Ralston and Marcella dance was an extra for all of us! I just wanted to share with you all the excitement at Barren County High School.

At Barren County High School all students are requires to take a Humanities class prior to graduating. This class covers the “Arts” like dance, drama, music and art. The students in the picture are sophomores and juniors participating in a dance combination of the Waltz and Salsa. Also seen dancing, Superintendent Dr. Jerry Ralston and his wife, Marcella showcased over 10 dances for the students. The dances ranged from the Foxtrot to the Hustle and Cha-Cha. It was a fantastic display of how we can participate in dance for a lifetime said teacher/dance instructor Sue Prieskorn. It was so great to see Dr. Ralston and his wife dance with finesse and joy.

Hey Bill,
Mary Alice and I got up for an early morning hike in Owensboro recently and found this nice morel. We didn't know it at the time, but when harvesting "dry land fish" one should cut them at the stem, rather than yanking them out of the ground! This helps protect the delicate sclerotium that differentiate morels from other mushrooms.

The female cuts slits in twigs and deposit eggs in them..As the wingless, scaly young hatch, they drop to the ground, burrow in, and stay there 4 to 20 years.. This periodical cicada is different from the annual cicada by being darker with red eyes... Cicadas are sometimes called "locust" but the two are entirely two different insects..The locust looks like a large grasshopper.. As far as I know there are no locust in this part of the country..

Frances Bastien sent us this photo and writes:
My husband, Paul Bastien, was trimming Christmas trees across the road from our home south of Glasgow, and, as he clipped, looked down, and saw this snake (we think is a King snake) out sunning himself on a platform of pine limbs about four feet off the ground. They ignored each other, although that tree might not be as clipped as others, but after he called me to look, I came back to get the camera. The snake was as long as the one Indiana Jones used to escape the sand trap, maybe longer. We did leave him alone although I thought it would be a good idea to move him but my husband said no. Since he trims the trees and I don't, I said OK. If you print this, I hope some snake expert does not say it is not a King snake but a horribly poisonous one because, as you can see, I did get really close to take this picture.

This fawn was nestled against the foundation of the Administrative Office building at Mammoth Cave National Park on Tuesday morning (June 3, 2008). Park employees used the back entrance to avoid disturbing it. When in need of food, a doe will leave her fawn for a few hours and then return for it later in the day.

My daughter, River, turned three a few weeks ago. The theme of her party was "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse". Mickey Mouse actually came to her party which was a surprise to all of us (parents included, although probably not a surprise to Nanny Sharp). River was excited about his arrival although a little reluctant to get too close. She said "He's bigger than on TV."
