Robert Lindsey sent us these and writes:
I have attached photos from the Glasgow First Assembly of God youth group. One picture is from our trip to the Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville. We brought teddy bears, sponsored by members of our church, to the patients. Two of the pictures were taken during our live nativity scene. It was amazing how many people stopped by and said that they had never seen a live nativity before. Our youth leaders (Bobby and P.J. Lindsey and Tony and Diane Atwood) did a fantastic job of showing the youth what Christmas is actually about.

Gail, my son Patrick and I had a great opportunity to go to the Orange Bowl. The most important item on the trip's agenda was for the University of Louisville to win the BCS game against Demon Deacons of Wake Forest (which they did). Attached is a photo from our seats showing some of the action during the Orange Bowl. One of the most impressive features of the Orange Bowl was the fly-by during the National Anthem. The jets were so low you could see the pilots inside of the plane's cockpit. It made you almost want to reach out and give them a high-five. You can see this fly-by on the website Inside the search box, type in Orange Bowl. Then select the fly-by for the 2007 Orange Bowl.

It's for preschool and early elementary (she usually reads stories, has a game and crafts!). Shown are Hannah and the snake! (with Nathaniel and Millicent at a safe distance)... Pretty in Pink
Picture Featured:    January 27, 2007 Pretty in Pink
Chad Emmitt sent us this photo entitled "Pretty in Pink" and writes:
Hey Bill,
This is Tim Shoopman, Associate Pastor of Crossroads Christian Center. Crossroads is a new church in Glasgow and Pastor Tim issued a challenge to the congregation stating if they would fill all of our seats for one service that He would “don” some beautiful pink attire (complete with pink fuzzy slippers) and preach a service. Well it took some time but, thanks to the hard work of the Crossroad’s family they filled our auditorium for the Children’s Christmas Play. So I was thinking, since Pastor Tim looked so “pretty,” all of Glasgow should have a chance to see! (Especially all of Pastor Tim’s old Marine buddies!). There’s no telling what might happen at Crossroads Christian Center.

Judicial Gala
Picture Featured:    February 11, 2007 Judicial Gala
Tommy Fields sent us this photo and writes:
The attached photographs were taken January 19, 2007, in Louisville, Ky. at the “Judicial Article Gala” held to honor the “30th Anniversary Of The Judicial Article Celebration”. In 1975 leaders of the Ky. judiciary and the Ky. Bar boldly undertook to recreate our Court of Justice and bring it into the modern era. Prior to the successful judicial reform effort, Ky. courts operated under the 1891 Ky. Constitution, which had been little changed with respect to courts from the 1850 constitution. The proposed constitutional amendment was placed on the general election ballot for November, 1975, and was passed by a vote of 215,419 to 180,124. It was not until, January 31, 1977, that the Court of Appeals was determined to be fully operational and was directed by the Supreme Court of Kentucky to begin handling all cases brought before it. The photographs are of attendees Barren County Circuit Court Clerk Krissie Coe Fields and her husband, and also of Krissie and Walter Baker, a former Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court. The Gala was well attended by several present and past Kentucky Judges, Circuit Court Clerks, and several members of the Ky. Bar Association.

Multi-Holiday Celebration...
Picture Featured:    February 16, 2007 Multi-Holiday Celebration...
Mike Padgett sent us this photo and writes:
Back in August of '06 when Sgt. Miki Padgett surprised his Mother and Dad with a two week furlough visit from Iraq, they had no idea he would be extended four extra months. Rosana Padgett had a special cake made for him with all the happy holidays rolled into one celebration. Here is Miki and Mom on August 8, 2006 at home with the family having “the party.” Sgt. Padgett will not be home now until August 2007. Please pray for our troops.

In a recent email to his father, Pastor Mike Padgett, Miki stated concerning the four month extension in Iraq:
“I went through about 3 days of feeling sorry for myself and upset that we weren't coming home. I had to realize, that I have to suck it up and drive on. No use whining, because it will accomplish nothing. My men were really demoralized, and I have given them a few days to whine, but enough was enough and I had to put my foot down.

I am giving them a break from the road, but as for me, the rest of the team needs me as a scout. I have found the most IED's in the company before detonating and have a good track record as a leader. I do feel a sense of accomplishment and feel as though I am truly needed. I do not want to let the men down, and I would feel horrible if someone got hurt and I was not out there providing route recon.

I know what you are thinking, "My crazy son." All I can say is that I have a responsibility to these boy’s families. All of them will come home and it is my job to get them on that plane."

It was safe to say that the squirrels enjoyed them more than we did. What a great way to connect with nature.

My son Patrick Katchak and son-in-law Dan Klein decided to check out the Never Ever Ice Hockey League in Louisville. The league is just for people that have not skated or have never played hockey before. It was quite interesting to watch how the players handle themselves in a quite different environment. It was quite evident that ice skating and the skills of the sport of hockey are not an easy acquisition. There are two teams, blue and white. The boys are both on the blue. Dan scored the first goal of the season and last night Patrick scored 2 of the 3 goals scored by their team. If I just was 30 years younger..............

Barren County Administrators Take the Plunge for Charity
February 26, 2007 - Barren County High School Principal Keith Hale and Temple Hill Principal Jeff Richey, took the plunge into the icy waters on Saturday, February 24, at the National Guard Armory in the second annual Penguin Plunge for Barren County’s Junior Achievement fundraiser.

Keith Hale was voted Top Penguin in the competition for best dressed. Both administrators raised several hundred dollars for the local JA program.

“Mr. Hale also scored a perfect 10 on his plunge into the icy cold swimming pool from JA judges,” said BCHS teacher Cindy Jackson, who coordinated Hale’s participation. “BCHS raised $210.00 this year. Our goal was $300 but we did beat our donation of $125 last year so we are increasing.”

According to Jackson, Deanna Vance, a student teacher from WKU, created “The Trojan Man” costume. Senior Bethany Spillman painted Hale’s introductory sign. Students Courtney Thomas and Lyndsey Crumpton assisted Mr. Hale with the introductory sign as he jumped.

Jeff Richey, who raised approximately $100, created his own costume, which had a pointed attachment on top of an old football helmet. Sporting an old high school football jersey and shorts, Richey made a huge splash with a perfect cannon ball jump off the platform.

“It was the coldest thing I’ve ever done,” Richey said. “But it was worth it, anything to help out. I wish I could have raised more money but every little bit helps.”

“Our schools really benefit from the Junior Achievement Program,” said Superintendent Dr. Jerry Ralston. “On behalf of everyone in the Barren County School District, we want to thank and congratulates Mr. Hale and Mr. Richey for participating in the Penguin Plunge.”

WKU Interns Clean Up Illegal Dump
Picture Featured:    March 07, 2007 WKU Interns Clean Up Illegal Dump
Vickie Carson sent us this photo and writes:
(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK -- March 5, 2007) Illegal dumps are a big mess and a big deal. Just ask Edmonson County Solid Waste Coordinator Pat Prunty and the 13 volunteers who recently cleaned up a dump in the old rock quarry on Highway 728.

“We hauled off 1.32 tons of junk,” said Prunty. “Household waste, to automobile parts, to bed springs. The county, State Fish and Wildlife and Kentucky Environmental Protection are working closely with the landowner to monitor this site. Any future dumping will be prosecuted. It’s illegal, it’s ugly, and it hurts the land.”

The volunteers were members of the WKU/NPS Biology Intern Field Course, along with Student Conservation Association Intern Emily Booth, of New York and four Mammoth Cave National Park employees. The dump was directly above Big Branch Creek, which flows into the Nolin River in Mammoth Cave National Park.

“For the students, water quality was the lesson today,” said Mammoth Cave Ecologist Rick Olson, who helped Prunty coordinate the cleanup. “The class is designed to get the student-interns out of the classroom and into the field to put principles into practice. The experience helps make them competitive candidates in the job market after graduation.”

“The slope above the creek is a steep one, and everything had to be dragged by hand up the slope to the dumpster provided by the county,” added Olson. “The students received true hands-on experience today.” Follow the water -- Big Branch Creek, to Nolin, and into the Green River, through Mammoth Cave National Park and beyond. “Cleanups like this one can keep pollutants out of the rivers, improving habitat for fish and wildlife,” said Prunty.

The organization is called "Rupert's Kids" and it provides mentoring and educational programs for troubled youth. I was thrilled to meet him... what a nice guy he is! He is the ultimate Survivor, in more ways than one, and I think it is great that he works so hard to help troubled teens and young adults find better ways of life. Martha Nell Thomas sent us this photo and writes:
Mr. Anderson,
Yesterday, May 1 was Law Day. In commemoration of Law Day 2007, the members of the Barren County Bar Association and the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library will join together to provide the public at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library an internet Legal Research System known as WESTLAW.

Appropriately, the members of the Barren County Bar Asssociation have adopted the theme for Barren county Law Day, "Access to the Law." To make the law more accessible to the members of the general public a WESTLAW computer terminal will be located at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library which will provide access to all federal statutes; federal regulations; all US Supreme Court decisions; all decisions of the federal courts; state court decisions of all fifty states; state statutes for all fifty states; along with major treatises on a variety of legal topics. It is anticipated that this legal resource will be utilized by teachers and students of WKU, the local High Schools and members of the public.

This resource is being made available due to the contributions of the Barren County Bar Association and the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library. The following members of the Barren County Bar have contributed in excess of $5,000 toward this project: Judge Phillip Patton, Judge W. Mitchell Nance, Judge John T. Alexander, Robert M. Alexander, T. Rich Alexander, Carla Allen, Johnny Bell, cheryl Berry, Dale Burchett, Thomas W. Davis, Temple Dickinson, Brian Driver, Larry Garmon, Ken Garrett, Charlie Goodman, Ron Hampton, Betty Herbert, H. Jefferson Herbert, Brian Pack, Rita Riherd, Ben Rogers, John Rogers and Jeff Sharp.

The Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library Board has agreed to match the contributions of the Barren County Bar up to %5,000 annually in order to make this resource available to the public. The members of the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Libary Board of Trustees consist of Chairman John Rogers, Frances Bastien, Cecile Garmon, Vickie Newberry and Larry Pike.

The Members of the Library staff will be provided training in the use of the various databases of WESTLAW. Also, teachers who are interested will be provided training upon request. The Library staff will assist individual library patrons in using this new service.

Happy Birthday to Me, Happy Birthday to Me!

Mike Wallace's lawn tractor sent us this photo and writes:
Hi there,
I'm Mike's General Electric battery powered lawn tractor and I'm 34 years old this month. Mike bought me new from Maurice Wolfe at The Standard Farm Store back in May of 1973.

A couple weeks ago he went down to Saylors Golf Carts and bought me a new set of batteries for my birthday present. Six brand new 6-volt golf cart batteries that should keep me mowing for at least another 8 years or so.

During those 34 years, Mike bought a couple of larger electric tractors and so I went up to Illinois for a couple of years and mowed his Mom and Dad's yard. After they retired and moved to South Carolina, I came back to Kentucky and I worked for Ollie Dennis for a couple more years after that. But that was several years ago, and now I'm back mowing Mike's yard and helping him pickup leaves and stuff.

He says as long as he can keep me running, he'll never have a noisy gasoline powered riding mower. Except for the mower deck, my paint is original and so are my front tires that say GE Elec-Trak on them. When we get done mowing the yard, Mike plugs my built-in battery charger into an ordinary 110-volt outlet and for less than $1.50 worth of electricity, I'm ready to go again next week.

I took this picture of the White House on April 18 while in our nation's capital visiting our son. You may notice the guard posted on the roof (top left). I took 500 pictures in the three days I was there. Washington, DC is an amazing place to visit and tour. This was my third time to be in DC. The first time was in 1976 during the bi-centennial. This time was the best as I was able to stay longer, and I walked all over the heart of DC and the Tidal Basin. I wish I had purchased a pedometer before I left to see how far I walked. I also enjoyed riding the new Metro (subway) system a few times. It was a nice experience. However, it was weird traveling underneath the Potomac River to go over to Virginia to visit Arlington Cemetery. As always, the memorials and monuments are always favorite sites. I was especially impressed with the new World War II memorial and with Franklin D. Roosevelt's new memorial. The Vietnam Memorial is always a special place to visit. I especially wanted to see again the names of two Cave City young men who died two weeks apart in May of 1968, my first cousin, Anthony Dwight Hatcher and Corland Ellis Dennison.

"mohon" sent us this photo and writes:
Barren County Trojans victorious over an outstanding Glasgow Scotties baseball club for the 2007 District Championship, this is a good rivalry game because players from both teams are great friends and support each other win or lose. Everyone believes that these two schools have bad blood between one another but that is not the case because these two schools and their athletes, students, and fans are very supportive and classy not only at sporting events but in the community as well. These kids help make this community more appealing to tourists and newcomers in the area, and this is just another reason why this town is a great place to live. I hope this great town will make the trip to WKU in Bowling Green, KY to watch these to teams represent this area in the 4th Region Tournament on Monday-Wednesday of next week. With a little added fan support and community morale these two teams could be very successful in the tournament.
