These Surprise Lilies come up at this time of the year. The foliage comes up in the spring, dies down and then these stems shoot up and bloom. Ginny Moon sent us this photo and writes:
My husband snapped this photo of our "nightly visitors". The opossums and raccoons seem to enjoy the sunflower seeds from the squirrel feeder located just off our deck. The feeder is also visited nightly by flying squirrels after the opossums and raccoons leave the scene. This photo certainly got the attention at my father's nursing home in Illinois. All those old "former farmers" could not believe a raccoon and opossum could be friends! I just told them they are Kentucky creatures and a bit different from those Yankee creatures.

Mammoth Cave tests a GEM (Global Electric Motorcar)
Picture Featured:    September 13, 2003 Mammoth Cave tests a GEM (Global Electric Motorcar)
Vickie Carson sent us this photo. She writes:
Mammoth Cave National Park Tests a GEM for Campground Use

The Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition, through Martin Autoplex in Bowling Green, recently loaned a GEM (Global Electric Motorcar) to Mammoth Cave National Park to test in the campground. Rangers use this in place of a gasoline-powered golf cart to make their rounds of the 109 sites. One ranger noted how quiet the GEM operated, an advantage in the tent and RV neighborhood.

GEM is a low-speed electric vehicle, equipped with all the amenities of a standard vehicle, but operates at speeds below 35mph. The two-person cab is designed for open-air use (soft-sided doors snap on in case of rain). GEM recharges overnight.

The GEM has moved on to other test locations, including the Louisville Water Company, Louisville Metro Government, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and several state parks. According to Melissa Howell of KCFC, fleets that are not mandated by federal authorities can get a $1,000 rebate on one if they purchase it.

In the photo above, Mammoth Cave National Park Superintendent Ronald Switzer chats with Campground Ranger Cyndi Logsdon about the GEM vehicle.

Early in June, 2003, Nathan and Stacie Sewell (of Glasgow), along with her parents, Edd Lee and Janice Crump (of Park City) went on a wilderness excursion to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) on the border of Minnesota and Canada. Four days into the adventure, the couples were greeted by a very large black bear and her 4 baby cubs. Momma bear ransacked the campsite, eventually adding a back door and side door to their tent. Needless to say, this was quite an experience!

Tropical Cyclone Graham?

Vickie Carson from Mammoth Cave National Park sent us this dramatic photo and writes:
Bill:
John and Joann Fry sent us this photo from the area around Cumberland Island National Seashore on the Georgia coast. John used to work at Mammoth Cave NP, then transferred to Cumberland Island. Joann taught at GHS.

I think natural, untamed forces like this give us a glimpse of God's mighty power.

There's more to this story, though...

Several people have emailed us to say this is not Isabel as some believe. About.com says:

This image began circulating via email on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003 as Hurricane Isabel bore down on the eastern seaboard of the US. It seems to have been intentionally mislabeled. According to a Webpage of the National Weather Service, the photo, credited to Steve Todd, actually documents a tropical cyclone sighted in the Pacific Ocean six months ago named "Graham."

Though we have reason to suspect the information on the National Weather Service site isn't perfectly accurate either (it lists Graham as a 2002 storm, when in fact it struck in late February 2003), it does put the lie to the email's claim that the photo depicts Hurricane Isabel.

Patrick Katchak sent us this photo. He writes:
Since sending you my last picture, when I was living in Michigan, I have moved back to Kentucky! I have attached a great shot of the Coca-Cola balloon that is operated in Louisville.

Since I work for Coca-Cola, it would only be proper to send you a picture of me and my wife, Angie, in the balloon. We flew out over Eastern Jefferson county. We were up for an hour-and-a-half and flew almost 14 miles. We also climbed to 1008 feet during the flight. It may interest some to know that the pilot has very little control over the balloon. During the flight, you are almost completely dependent on the wind. The only way to adjust steering is by increasing and reducing altitude.

The experience is a great one and I would recommend it to all. I invite all of my friends from Glasgow to come up and take a ride!

Have a great day. Your Website and the pictures you post have entertained me daily for almost four years.

State PE Group Names Nesbitt Elementary Teacher of the Year

Erica Nesbitt, a physical education teacher and guidance counselor at Red Cross Elementary, has been named the 2003 Kentucky Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (KAHPERD) Elementary Teacher of the Year.

"It's an honor," replied Nesbitt when asked about the award. "Looking back, it's been eight years of hard work, but I love what I do. So, this has just been icing on the cake, so to speak. The students and the people with whom I work have been wonderful. I've received lots of congratulations," she added.

"Ms. Nesbitt is certainly deserving of this honor," praised Rita Berry, Red Cross Elementary Principal. "Her classroom is a model of student engagement, and she is a leader in curriculum development. Red Cross is very lucky to have Ms. Nesbitt at our school," she added.

With nine years of teaching experience, earning National Board Certification and being chosen as the KAHPERD 2003 Teacher of the Year may be only the beginning for Nesbitt.

"Eventually, I want to enter administration," she stated. "I want to be an elementary principal."

Nesbitt's husband, Barry, is a teacher in the Russellville Independent School System, and they have one son, Mason.

Hey, Bill, Jeff here.

Recently I went to Cumberland Falls and had the opportunity to take a few photos. So I thought I would drop one to you to see if you might put it on the Webpage.

Cumberland Falls is only two hours away and I bet there are a lot of people that have not been there. Well, it's a must-see. It is a great place to pack a lunch to spend a weekend. It is extremely easy to get to and has sidewalks to the viewing areas (it is also handicap accessible). This photo was taken on Oct. 12th. The falls are 60 feet high and stretch 120 feet across the crest. It is also one of two places in the world that a "Moonbow" is visible on a predictable basis. I plan to get that shot later.

The Scotties defeated Monroe Co., Metcalfe Co. and Barren Co. in the finals 44-43 to win the championship. As a coach, I was very proud of their effort and heart they showed in each game and down the stretch to win the tournament. Above is a team photo we took after the game with our 1st place trophy (our first in five years).

This is a wonderful organization and I'm very proud of him.

Candlelight performances included the Edmonson County High School Chorus, the Icy Sink Baptist Church youth choir, the Mammoth Cave Brass Band (members of the Glasgow High School Band), Ed Moody on bagpipes and the Caveman Barbershop Chorus.

In the upper left, you can see the crowd inside the cave, enjoying the music by candlelight. Upper right is Park Ranger Chuck DeCroix, who did a wonderful job as MC for the day. Lower right are spectators on their way into the cave for the performance. Pictured are Olivia Marsh, Juanita Anderson and Kelly and Sam Anderson. Cave Sing was initiated in 1980 as a way to show appreciation for the park's gracious neighbors.

Vickie Carson sent us this photo and writes:

Mammoth Cave National Park and Hotel Earn Environmental Award
The Mammoth Cave National Park/Mammoth Cave Hotel Partnership was selected as a recipient of the 2003 Department of the Interior Environmental Achievement Awards for Environmental Leadership through Cooperation and Partnership.

Mammoth Cave NP Deputy Superintendent Bruce Powell and Forever/NPC Senior Vice President Bill Butts traveled to Washington, DC on Nov. 6 to receive the award on behalf of park and hotel employees.

The park and hotel have established many environmentally preferable practices ranging from alternatively fueled vehicles and equipment, water saving fixtures and a strong recycling program. The stormwater filtering system now being installed at the park's major parking lots will catch and remove pollutants before they drain into the cave.

In the photo above, Mammoth Cave Hotel General Manager Greg Davis, Forever/NPC Resorts Senior VP Bill Butts, Superintendent Ronald Switzer, Hotel Asst. General Manager Sarah Martin and Deputy Superintendent Bruce Powell pose with the awards at an employee reception.

ParkWatch at Mammoth Cave
Picture Featured:    December 26, 2003 ParkWatch at Mammoth Cave
Vickie Carson sent us this photo and information. She writes:
ParkWatch Now Includes a Reward for Information

MCNP managers are asking local residents to report any suspicious activity to rangers at a toll-free number, (888) 219-1599. Rewards are available for information leading to successful prosecution and conviction for crimes committed in the park. Recent marijuana finds in the park and the surrounding counties have prompted rangers to ask for the public's help.

Mammoth Cave initiated the ParkWatch program several years ago and it has been a help to the law enforcement staff. To increase its effectiveness, Ranger David Alexander (in the photo) has been appointed the park's drug enforcement coordinator.

"Folks who provide information can remain anonymous and need not worry about us giving out their names," explained Alexander. "Everything they give us will remain totally confidential. We're more concerned about the quality of the information than we are about the name of the information source."
