Hey Bill - Pete tells me that you might like to use some of my pictures. These were taken at Wayne & LaVerta Garrett's donkey farm. This is the newest acquisition. Her name is Sally and she's a henny. A henny is a hybrid like a mule, except the sire is a horse and the dam is a donkey. Hennys are only produced approximately 10% of the time out of the breedings. Mules are more common because they are much easier to produce. The animals take their head configuration after the sire, thus the henny looks more like a horse and the mule like a donkey.

Notice the "cross" on Sally's back. It's said the donkey acquired the cross after it carried Christ into Jerusalem.

Bernheim Forest at Clermont, Ky. (near Bardstown) is beautiful in summer. It's well worth the trip up I-65. I'm sending several photos and hope local folks will make a visit there. Quite a flock of Canada Geese live at Bernheim Forest.

This photo was taken after football practice last night (Thursday, July 21) at Glasgow High School. The Scotties were served homemade ice cream as they came out of the locker room. They seemed to enjoy a "cool" treat after a hot day on the practice field. GO SCOTTIES!

It appears that the first cutting of hay yielded a bumper crop. With forecasts of a severe drought, farmers can only wait to see if they can get a second cutting. - Wendell

This photo was taken Friday afternoon at sunset from our yard, which is adjacent to a field separated only by a fence. The cows seemed to be enjoying the cool weather at that particular time of day as much as the people were.

Seven years of waiting came to an end on July 5th, 2000, when two adopted "biological" brothers met for the first time at Guntown Mountain. Greg Walker and Chris Steffen were thrilled to share the day together with their new families.

Hello, Bill. A friend of mine gave me the seeds for this plant which she called a "Bush Moonflower." It lived up to its name the other night in my backyard outside Glasgow. I thought people might enjoy seeing a picture of this rather spectacular night-blooming flower.

Here's a picture of a rainbow that formed just about dark 7-21-2000. Picture taken looking across Whitney Woods Rd. at red barn community. There was a smaller rainbow at the left of this one.

Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) - Most commonly seen as a climbing vine, Poison Ivy can also take the form of a shrub or even a groundcover. Long known as the bane of the woodland visitor, Poison Ivy produces an oil that bonds with our own skin oils to produce a rash that can develop into oozing blisters. The juice from the stem of jewelweed that usually grows nearby is an antidote to the poison. Poison Ivy produces large numbers of berries that are an important winter food source for birds and thus the seeds are easily spread. It grows along many of our trails here in Bernheim.

(right) I feed a lot of birds, usually black oil sunflower seeds. Looks like one of them took hold and rewarded me with a bloom.

How many butterflies do you count on the coneflowers??

Although at first glance one may think the June Bug (on the right) committed suicide, I tend to believe it's the work of the Loggerhead Shrike (pictured on the left). These birds impale their victims on a sharp object such as a thorn, or, in this case, barbed wire. They return later for a tasty treat. The birds themselves, sometimes called "Butcher Birds," are getting to be very rare. They're on the endangered species list in some states and parts of Canada.

Here is medicine in the raw. Ginseng is prized the world over as a potent medicine for all kinds of ills and maladies. Ginseng, like so many other things in nature, is getting hard to find in its native state. Over-harvesting by greedy folks has just about wiped it out. It can be cultivated, but the quality is inferior. This plant is in its wild environment.

Am sending photo made last night at the Appreciation Rally for Governor Paul Patton at the residence of Dr. and Mrs. Bobby Guilfoil on North Jackson Highway. Tanner is the 7-month-old son of Brad and Vonda Pace of Glasgow. The Governor is never too busy for even the youngest as he mingled through the crowd.

This is the Barren Co. Saddle Club on one of their weekly Saturday rides. On this trip, we rode about 15 miles in the Cooktown community. This picture was taken on the Clifton Bradshaw Farm, just before we crossed Peters Creek. There were 13 wagons and about 12 horse riders.

Here is a weird photo. A few years ago I was copying a photo of Butler Funeral home. My first copy was not turning out like I wanted it so I took it out of the enlarger and laid it aside. When I turned on the lights, I saw this image on the picture that I had laid aside. I did not touch it up in any way. I found out from Don Butler that two people had died in the funeral home while visiting over the years. The original photo was taken about 1945.

Have been hearing a lot about the Glasgow Concert Band that has been formed. Thought perhaps they would enjoy seeing their predecessors from around 1920 (the above information was included under the picture).

Young Mr. Jones is enjoying summer in October by skipping rocks across a creek in Barren County out the Kino Road. Jacob was thrilled to see a crawdad, minnows, water skippers and even a frog at this time of year.

Have a couple of excellent fall scene photos taken October 25 from our home on Horton-Rigdon Road, second highest point in Barren County (the highest point is Pruitt's Knob near Cave City, currently uninhabited) which reflect the last beautiful, breathtaking colors of the end of fall in Barren County.

This wasp is getting nectar from the last Goldenrod standing in my field. The early frosts killed all the other flowering plants in the area.

Sara Blann enjoyed her first Oreo cookie while visiting her Aunt Ann in Glasgow. Sara is the 9-month-old daughter of Shirley Hall Blann and the granddaughter of Betty Goddard Hall.

No, it's not a twig! It's an insect called a "Walking Stick." They feed on the leaves of oak, locust, cherry and walnut. I can remember as a child we called them the "Devil's Ridy Horse."

D.T. Froedge spoke to members of the Mammoth Cave Amateur Radio Club at the 11/21 regular ham radio club meeting. Froedge, a physicist, spoke regarding radio waves. Member's questions ventured into sub-atomic particles and antimatter. It's easy to get a ham license - come and join us.

I took this picture in Morgantown, Indiana yesterday (11/24/2000). There are hundreds of geese in the corn fields there. I don't guess they all fly south for the winter if they can find enought to eat here.

The Glasgow Square came alive for Christmas over Thanksgiving weekend. It takes a lot of labor to decorate, but the fruits of that labor are quietly appearing.

Since a sleigh (loaded down with goodies), reindeer and ol' St. Nick himself place considerable structural stress on the roof, a house on East Cherry St. and a business on Columbia Ave. are taking advantage of a dry, although cool, day to get some roof work done. -- Photos by the WebMeister

The photo above was taken Wednesday morning on Myrtle Street. Reportedly, the van was being driven by a student on the way to school, who slid and spun on the ice and hard-packed snow (no severe injuries). The Electric Plant Board replaced the pole shortly after the accident.

Your local Electric Plant Board has reached several milestones recently, including their 4000th cable TV household and 2000th high speed Internet customer. To help celebrate these achievements, they let go with a fireworks display on Friday night. EPB Superintendent Billy Ray urged Glasgow to "go out Friday night and take in the beautiful Christmas lighting and decorations in the neighborhoods around town and finish off the evening by joining us for a fireworks extravaganza in celebration of Glasgow’s success in providing advanced services for itself.” Although the temperature was quite cold, many people turned out (quite a few watched the display from the warmth of automobiles). Bright Holly berries at Glasgow State Nursing Facility are part of the facility's Christmas decor and Saturday night's snowfall is icing on the cake.
