| December 2007 | Farewell Kind Reader . . . All Seven of You | |
Welcome to the end of 2007 and the final edition of The RBG Newsletter in its present format. This will certainly be disappointing news for the thousands, hundreds, dozens, many . . . okay, the seven of you who anxiously await the arrival of your bill and this newsletter every month. However, all is not lost. The RBG will continue to be available in other ways.

| November 2007 | Important information regarding the University of Kentucky Men's Basketball Television Schedule | |
Are you a fan of University of Kentucky Men's Basketball? Do you know, or live with such a person? If so, please read this. Make your similarly afflicted acquaintance read it. Post it on the refrigerator or wrap it around the remote control. Do everything you can to help us get the word out on this because, well, it is that time of year again.
Before we talk about anything else, here are the details on the UK Men's Basketball games which will not be widely available to everyone with basic cable.

| October 2007 | Growing Pains For Glasgow | |
Somewhere around 1974, Glasgow’s electric power supply began to flow through a new substation located discreetly in our southern suburb, Haywood. Since then, like many of us who endured the 70's, that substation has gotten a bit old and gray and in need of a long vacation. So, we are about to embark upon a long and expensive voyage which will end in the construction of a new substation to provide some relief to our old friend in Haywood.

| September 2007 | More =/= Better | |
The record heat wave of August has done more than kill off our grass and flowers, it has evaporated the shroud which has hidden some of the dirtiest secrets of the energy business. You say you have not noticed this? You will, dear readers, you will.
|
| August 2007 | Energy, Carbon Dioxide, and Pizza Went Fishing Together . . . | |
Have you noticed how hot it is? The electric bill associated with this newsletter is likely the biggest one you will get this year (if it isn’t, the one you get in September probably will be). Did you ever wonder how your consumption compares to your neighbor down the street or your friends in nearby towns? If so, read on and we will tell you where you stand.
|
| July 2007 | The Survey says..... | |
Well now, last month we urged you to let us know what we should do about adding new programming services like FSNS and The Disney Channel and just more than 600 of you did just that. We serve about 7,500 cable households, so that level of voting was a bit disapointing but is likely enough to give us a really accurate read on how our customers feel.
|
| June 2007 | Okay, so we're not Dancing With the Stars, but we still need your vote! | |
We dedicate a lot of ink in this newsletter to the unique aspects of living in Glasgow and the products and services that are available here in our home town. This month is no exception to that trend as we are going to offer you a very rare opportunity to make a big decision on some of the programming we carry on our cable system. Prepare to exercise your rights as the owner of your cable television system!
|
| May 2007 | We Have A Plan | |
In Glasgow, there is no clear line between electric
power, cable television, high-speed internet and
telephone service. That situation has been
carefully cultivated for the last twenty years.
While this relationship might not have always been
obvious to you, it has certainly always been our
plan.
|
| April 2007 | Glasgow's Brightest Technology | |
It is finally April. Hopefully, the “winter of our discontent” is over and we can all start coming out of the house. It is in that spirit of emergence that we have chosen to discuss some Glasgow technology that you will begin to notice a lot more as you venture out of doors at night . . . street and security lighting.
|
| March 2007 | Immovable Object . . . Irresistible Force | |
Once again, Glasgow finds itself blessed with an asset that no other community of comparable size or geography can claim. The Jama M. Young Technology Center (JMYTC) is indeed a rare jewel in our community's collection.
Technology centers such as the one recently dedicated at the Glasgow Electric Plant Board normally wind up in much larger cities. More often than not, they are built by very wealthy and forward-looking corporations that have the vision and resources to plan such facilities. They rarely find themselves spending their days in a small town like Glasgow.
|
| February 2007 | A New Beginning | |
As you have likely seen in the newspaper, we recently decided to give up the search for a new power supplier, for now, and return to our old contract with TVA. For the last three years we have been beating the bushes and battling big companies in an attempt to a find better deal for Glasgow's electric power needs. It was a complicated game of chess we were playing, against some very powerful opponents. In early January we realized that most of our chess pieces had been taken and we admitted that TVA had us in checkmate. Many of you might be interested in just how this game played out and that is what we will try to explain this month. It is a story of high drama and unbelievable irony.
|
| January 2007 | Let's Make 2007 Last Longer! | |
How can it be 2007 already? It only seems like a couple of months have gone by since we were saying the same thing about 2006. Although we Americans are among the most successful people on the planet, we also seem to be among the most highly stressed. However, if you are among the many folks who got a new computer and internet service for Christmas (or if you are an old hand at the internet), there are ways to use those tools to reclaim several hours a year that might otherwise be consumed doing mundane tasks.
|
| December 2006 | Answers to Frequently Asked Questions | |
Okay, time to wind up the year with a flourish of information that has been put off while I was lecturing you on energy supply. I am sorry I got so carried away. As promised, this month’s newsletter has information which is much more fun and digestible. We are going to answer some questions that seem to be on a lot of our customer’s minds. Some of this we have done before, but it is worth repeating. The rest of this is new information that concerns all of our customers. I hope you enjoy it.
|
| November 2006 | Honey! I’m back . . . what was it that you wanted? | |
For the last four months we have been talking about our trip to the energy supermarket to find electricity for our community over the next 20 years. Well, actually, as it turned out I was talking about it and you were watching television and ignoring me. Maybe I would have gotten a better response if I just shouted out, “Honey, I’m going to the store, want me to pick up anything?” Your silence on this matter was deafening and we are left to assume that anything we pick up at the store will be just fine (or it could just be that what you were watching on television was more interesting than our future energy supply . . . if so that must have been some great show!)
|
| October 2006 | Part Four: Magic Elixirs and Life Boats | |
This month we will continue our discussion of Glasgow's energy future and the possible paths we might take toward properly planning for that future. In Part One we talked about why we decided to start shopping for new energy supply. In Part Two we talked about the forces acting upon Glasgow's energy future. Then we talked about how our corner of the world may look in 2020, and started discussing four different paths we might take to make the best out of a rather dismal energy outlook. In Part Three we addressed two of those potential paths and this month we are going to examine the other two.
|
| September 2006 | Part Three: You Call These Choices? | |
In Parts One and Two of this series we discussed the reasons why we decided to go shopping for a new power supplier and just what we think our future might look like. We also discussed options for finding the best power supply for the future that we envision. W e even talked about the four possible paths we might pursue as described in the book, Power Down. This month we are going to continue that discussion and talk about a couple of those options and how they might play out here in Glasgow.
|
| August 2006 | What Sort Of Party Are We Planning? | |
In Part One we talked about the reasons for our decision to shop for new sources of power for Glasgow’s future. This month in Part Two of the
story we are going to talk about what Glasgow and the rest of our world might look like between 2009 and 2030. You see, we really cannot make an intelligent decision about what should be on our power “shopping list” until we decide what sort of meal we are going to prepare. So, come along and we will gaze into the energy supply crystal ball.
|
| July 2006 | Part One: Why We Shop For New Sources Of Power | |
Everyone knows that the EPB is hopping for a new supply of electric power for Glasgow’s future. Our present contract for power from TVA will expire December 1, 2008. While there has been continuing sporadic news coverage about our shopping trip, it seems wise for me to commence a detailed
explanation of why we are shopping and what we hope to accomplish.
|
| June 2006 | Do You Need A Cure For ADCS? | |
With apologies to Professor Harold Hill and everyone associated with The Music Man. . . Well, we got trouble my friend, right here in Broadband City. . .I say trouble with a capital "T" and that rhymes with "D" and that stands for digital broadcast signals.
|
| May 2006 | The Annual Talk About Trees and Wires | |
You dread it. We dread it. The trees dread it. Everyone hates it but the companies we hire to do the work. Yes, it is time to talk about tree trimming again.
|
| April 2006 | This Too Shall Pass... | |
Thank goodness, it is April. There were a number of events in February and March that were not any fun for us at the EPB nor were they any fun for hundreds of families here in our community. However, Glasgow is not a place that takes these blows without hitting back. Let’s talk for a few minutes about how we are responding to adversity.
|
| March 2006 | Putting All Your Eggs in One Basket | |
When your team at the Glasgow EPB gazes out into the future, we see three major projects that need to be done to protect your way of life in Glasgow over the next several years...
|
| February 2006 | Coal Is King In Glasgow Too... | |
Coal, coal mining, and coal costs have been in the news a lot lately and none of that news has been happy. It is pretty easy to dismiss this news and these events as being unrelated to our life here in Glasgow, but such a dismissal would be hasty. Especially the cost part.
|
| January 2006 | It's 2006...Participate!!! | |
If you are reading this, you made it to see 2006! Congratulations. A lot of really fine people in our community left us in 2005. I will not attempt to list them here...
|
| December 2005 | A Little Something For Everyone... | |
'Tis the season you know. And since Christmas carols are everywhere this time of the year, this issue of The Red, Blue & Green can be sung(well...sort of) to the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas." Enjoy.
|
| November 2005 | From my cold, dead hands... | |
Okay, I'm not Charlton Heston and I do not feel that strongly about my guns, but I am almost that passionate about my digital cable box with integrated DVR. I have often been accused, sometimes correctly so, of being fond of just about every sort of new, high-tech, gadget that comes along.
|
| October 2005 | October's Party...Not | |
I thought I would start this month with a little poetry to celebrate the season. Atumn is a wonderful time of year, even though this year events in the world, especially along our Gulf Coast, will certainly dampen our enjoyment.
|
| September 2005 | From Glasgow To New Orleans, Technology Fails... | |
Before the end of August I had an upbeat and simi-wity version of this newsletter written about some of the new technology we have available. But somehow, after the power outage we experienced before Katrina got to Glasgow and after watching coverage of the disastrous impact of Katrina on the Gulf Coast of our country, I did not have the heart to send out a humorous newsletter.
|
| August 2005 | Saving money on energy costs - secrets you should know... | |
There is a lot of drama to be had just by driving around town and checking out the rising price of gasoline. While not so prominently posted, the same is true for natural and LP gas. Now, with the recent announcement by TVA, electic power is set to also increase in cost this October.
|
| July 2005 | Wire Worries No More... | |
My first time on the witness stand of a real life courtroom was right here in the Barren County Courthouse in 1989. At the time, Telescripps Cable Company was accusing the EPB of improperly using their cable wiring for those who were leaving Telescripps and signing up for our new cable service.
|
| June 2005 | Searching for an Alternative to TVA... | |
This month we are going to talk about a matter of extreme importance to all of you who buy electric power from the Glasgow EPB. We are going to talk about our efforts, over the last two years, and, likely over the next couple of years as well, to find an alternative source of electric power for the city of Glasgow.
|
| May 2005 | The Wires and the Trees... | |
Please gather around folks, it is time for the talk. I don't mean THE talk that rhymes with the title above, but one that is sort of like that talk, just not as interesting, and a whole lot simpler to illustrate.
|
| April 2005 | The Plaza Theatre, Glasgow Technology You Will Love... | |
We have been talking now for a few months about how you can use the technology available here in Glasgow to make your life easier. This month we continue the series by talking about something you might not have expected.
|
| March 2005 | Glasgow, your new telephone service is ready... | |
It's another month and thus it is time for another installment in our series of recommendations on ways to use the technology available in Glasgow to make your life more simple and give you more time to do other important things.
|
| February 2005 | The Interactive Program Guide will make You The Master Of Your Cable TV Service... | |
Last month we promised to deliver a series of newsletter articles that would help you better understand how to use technology to make your life easier. This month we continue the series by talking about how to simplify and improve your relationship with your television.
|
| January 2005 | It's a New Year, Come on, Try Something New!... | |
This month we are starting something new in our monthly newsletter. We are going to talk to you a little each month about the ways you can make your life easier by trying out some of the new (and also some things that are not so new) technologies available right here in Glasgow.
|
| December 2004 | Cable Lineup Changes at Hand... | |
We have been talking about this for several months. Now, the time is here to put the changes into place. I'm talking about the many changes coming at the end of the month on our cable television channel lineup.
|
| November 2004 | The Busy Season is Upon Us... | |
Actually, it seems that all seasons around the EPB are busy but this one is extraordinarily so. There really is not room here to fully explain everything that is happening right now, so this month we will just give you a brief outline of the many matters now in play.
|
| October 2004 | Telephone Service from the EPB... | |
We have talked about this several times, but now it is official and we have a lot to tell you about the service. The Glasgow EPB in partnership with Cinergy Communications Company will be offering local phone service to EPB customers, beginning in October!
|
| September 2004 | There's a Better Way to Get Your Bill... | |
Starting this month we are going to step our efforts to get you to take advantage of a much easier way to receive and view your monthly billing from us.
|
| August 2004 | How Come My Lights Were Off, But My Neighbors Were On?... | |
This month let's talk about the answer to this question since it seems to be on everyone's mind since the the intense storms of July 5 and July 13. While some of the readers of this newsletter only buy cable or HomeLAN from us, the answer to this question is applicable to whomever you are, wherever you might live, and whoever provides your electric power.
|
| July 2004 | Fifteen Years in the Cable Business, Time For An Update... | |
It was July, 1989, when we first expanded beyond the classic power business and began associating the provision of cable television and other broadband products with our electric power business.
|
| June 2004 | WAVE Movies On July 1st... | |
After many, many months of discussion of this matter, we have finally won a reprieve (at least for now) on the WAVE-TV matter. As you recall, WNKY 40 in Bowling Green has been pushing us to remove other NBC affiliated programming from our cable lineup.
|
| May 2004 | If We Could Only Carry What Our Customers Want... | |
If we could do that, we would be making ESPN a premium channel. The sports fans would pay extra for it, but it would be commercial-free, and everyone else could get a reduction in there cost of cable television. What a wonderful world that would be. However, that is not the world we live in.
