Here's the Anatomy of a URL (Uniform Resource Locator, more commonly known as a "Web" address):
http://www. glasgow-ky.com/epb/index.htm
http: HyperText Transfer Protocol (indicates a document for a Web browser)
// directories (folder and file names, just like in Windows or DOS)
www. World Wide Web (the part of the lnternet that "speaks Web")
glasgow-ky the domain name of your Internet Service Provider, the Glasgow EPB
(the folks that provide your lightning-fast access)
.com/ commercial (business). Other suffixes: .gov (government), .edu (schools),
.net (network), .mil (military) and .org (non-profit organization)
epb/ the directory where this particular page is stored
index.htm the page name in HyperText Markup Language (this tells the computer
that it's looking at an HTML document--i.e. a Web page)
(Note that non-US addresses typically end in a 2-letter country code)
